purple is the color of loyalty -- friendship, kindess, and solidarity. it represents everything kate wishes she was and knows she has never lacked. it holds fast to her identity, threads woven through the clothes that she wears and the mantel she took up long ago; arguably, the endless shades of violet and lavender, mulberry and heliotrope are perhaps ... tacky in their abundance, but purple, in its essence, is the color of home. gold is the color of prominence and wealth. it reminds kate of her father, tall and proud. It reminds her of her mother, vague memories bathed in shimmering sunlight. gold is the color of her sister, susan's beautiful flaxen hair when the light hits it just so -- honey and amber spun into lustrous curls, tawny and bright. gold is happiness. gold is wealth. gold is beauty. red is the color of blood run crimson from flesh wounds well-earned from battles readily won. (red is the color that bathes her memories of HIM, red and black, the history she wishes she could erase.) central park is bathed in a peculiar shade of sanguine, but ruby is the color of a first kiss. red is passion. red is anger. red is love. red is fear. red is hatred. red is raw.
