One thing that frustrates me about Star Trek is this complete inability for them to get the right season structure.
It's either all standalones with a reset button at the end, with hardly any character growth. Characters go through such huge traumas and they're just never mentioned again.
Then they go to the other extreme - one giant shocking storyline over a season with no breathing room for anything else, and with character growth that often feels forced.
DS9 got closest to a happy mix of the two.
But do you know one non-Star Trek show that got the balance consistently right over more than a decade?
Stargate - especially Stargate SG-1.
Honestly they have the perfect mix of ongoing storyline and standalone episodes... and both types of show have produced wonderful character moments and incredible character growth.
Whoever is gonna be in charge of Star Trek really ought to watch Stargate, and learn a few things.
