please enjoy this post-canon fanon starecross gang meme that has been lurking deep in a folder for probably about 2 years now, with thanks to @palavapeite for brainstorming help at the time
So I was gonna write a JSMN fic about Segundus finally starting up his school of magic, but then I realized the only reason I wanted to do that was to make a joke where Segundus thinks about sorting all the students into four houses based on their personality traits, but then decides that would be a bad idea
I really fancied writing a little JS&MN ficlet, so I took the Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the day for my prompt and started typing. This took me 15 minutes to write and proofread, so beware of errors. (I’ll reread tomorrow to see if I hate it.)

The library at Starecross contained a great, long table. It was an old thing, much dented in places and scratched in others, yet its size and its elaborate decoration (including eight clawed feet) declared it to have once had grander fortunes.
This past was perhaps its downfall, for it seems (if one wishes to give weight to the lives of objects, which, if one holds faith in the magic of fairies, one must) that a piece of furniture once grand will happen to remember such grandness, and indeed, will begin to resent its current low station.
By which I mean, of course, that the students at Starecross ought to consider their surroundings a little more when practising their magic. For one student had, in the library, attempted to reanimate a poor, deceased chick that he had found in the garden. This student was promptly surprised when the bird refused to return to life but the table upon which the bird sat instead jumped up upon its eight clawed feet, ran across the room, and splintered itself into many pieces in what appeared to be an attempt to run down the corridor to the great hall (this noble room presumably being where the table thought it belonged).

The name of this lady was Mrs Lennox. The other was Mrs Blake, her companion. They generally resided in Bath and they had come to Starecross so that Mrs Lennox might see the house one more time before it was sold. "Foolish, is it not?" said Mrs Lennox to Mr Segundus. "The house has stood vacant for years and years. I ought to have sold it long ago, but when I was a child I spent several summers here which were particularly happy."
