It is said that once the ancient Elvhen were spirits from the Fade. Lured by the land the Creators had nurtured, they took physical form and became the first elves. Over time fewer and fewer spirits converted, those remaining preferring to form friendships with those already changed. A mark was formed where the spirit touched the elf, creating a bond between them for the spirit to follow.

Star marked. Ellana turns her left hand over, examining the blemish she's had as long as she can remember. It is a star mark. Somewhere in the world, someone else has the exact same mark. She feels sorry for them. It is ugly.
The vaguely star shaped mark on her palm is the dull green of a slowly healing bruise. A brighter green at the center, it slowly fades out before disappearing into the brown of her skin. It had taken years for her clan to realize it wasn't a bruise or dirt or any number of other things.
The star marks in the tales were blue, purple, red, or pink. Ellana has never heard of a green one before. But the visiting hah'ren had noticed it as soon as he met her.
"Star marked," she murmurs, slowly running a single finger down her palm. It tickles and she wiggles her fingers. After the hah'ren's announcement, the adults had gathered together with the stranger in the Keeper's tent until nightfall.
Ellana doesn't understand what the fuss is about. She isn't a princess or priestess or anyone extraordinary. Everyone knows that it is bad luck for someone important to be star marked. But she isn't important. She is seven. Seven year old Dalish girls can't be important.
Tuelen finds her hiding spot in the nook between their aravel and the tent they slept in. "Ellana. Mamae and papae say it's time to sleep."
Sighing gustily, she flops on her back and looks up at the star studded sky. She holds her hand up and tries to imagine the mark as a star.
"Do you think your star is wondering about you?" Tuelen asks, staring down at her. His bare foot scuffs the dirt next to her head.
She swats at the foot and then shrugs when he continues staring. It didn't matter if they did. They'd never meet.
"Are you wondering about them?"
Ellana snorts and sits back up. "Nah. They probably smell bad or something. Just because we have ugly bruise hands doesn't mean we'd actually like each other."
"You're the one who smells bad!" He crows, bent over almost in half with laughter.
"Do not!" She yells before shoving him into the tent.
Their sisters shriek as the canvas comes down on their heads. Both children freeze, glance at each other, and then sprint in opposite directions.
It doesn't take long to track them down, and soon enough they were both cleaned up and lying in their bedrolls. Ellana opens and closes her fist gently. Star marked.
