The Pace Report: The 8th Annual 2017 Satchmo Awards Honoring Edward 'Kidd' Jordan & Stanley Crouch
The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation held their 8th Annual Satchmo Awards ceremony at the historic Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem, New York. The foundation honored the life of Edward "Kidd" Jordan the legendary saxophonist and educator.
Mr. Jordan has played for the likes of Big Mabelle, Lena Horne, Ray Charles, Cannonball Adderley, and Ornette Coleman. He founded the Improvisational Arts Ensemble in New Orleans. The many students that Edward has taught over the years include Jonathan Baptiste, Trombone Shorty, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and Walter Smith III. At age 82 Mr. Jordan continues to serve as the Artistic Director of the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp since it began in 1995.
Due to health issues, Mr. Jordan's son Marlon, accepted his award on his behalf.
The awards ceremony also acknowledged the Foundation's director, writer and critic, Stanley Crouch.
Music was performed by the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band. Past honorees include Herb Alpert, Clark Terry, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Heath, Dr. Barry Harris, and Norma Miller.
