leonard leans against the rock shielding them from more danger.  leave it to jim to cause havoc on EVERY planet they explore.  leonard glances over it briefly, taking note of how dangerous it is.  he quickly ducks, nearly hit by a blast.  “jesus christ in a river,”  he says, not even sure if that is a saying, but it is now.  “you’re gonna be just fine,” mccoy promises, hovering his tricorder over the wound, taking note of her vital signs.  he’s seen much worse;  thankfully, she should be fine.  the doctor reaches into his pack and pulls out a hypospray, injecting it just underneath the laceration on her leg.  there’s the loud sound of an explosion in the distance, and he curses under his breath.  “just once, i want some peace and goddamn quiet on a landing party.  welcomed with open arms like some -- gods.  wouldn’t that be nice?  and some mint juleps.”  he’s got a towel in hand, adding a clear liquid to it as he wipes away the blood.  “might sting a bit -- just stay still as you can.”  

          He laughs, the taste of bitterness upon his lips, a tang he hates more than he’ll admit. His caution is not borne of nature, an intrinsic part of his being, and it wars with his desperation eagerness to believe, to trust, to see ever the best. Yet caution demands more of him, and it’s more than his life on the line.    ❛ Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it. But I’m not sure you know what you’re asking for. ❜

          A nervous laughter bubbled from behind her teeth. It tickled at the back of her throat, but  did not reach down to shake her lungs with mirth.    ❛ I think I see myself clearly enough. ❜    She certainly had no interested in examining herself more minutely. She’d seen her reflection in the eyes of plenty, always lacking, always a disappointment. Sometimes it seemed that it would never matter what she accomplished: her personality and social ineptitude marred all.
