Garden Spider (writing spider, corn spider, or McKinley spider) Argiope aurantia Harmless to humans -- the female garden spider is a vision of loveliness amidst the greenery on a summer day.  As you can imagine -- it was difficult for me to exclude any one of the many photos I’ve taken of this striking femme fatale, and I’m sure there are more to come. You’ll notice a dense quality to the silk she’s woven across the center of her web -- this is known as a stabilimentum, and its purpose is a bit of a dispute amongst those that dispute such things.  Some claim the purpose of the stabilimentum is camouflage, while others claim its purpose is to keep birds away.  Only spiders that hunt by day construct a stabilimentum in their web.  In the case of the garden spider; she consumes the innermost threads of her web each night, spinning it anew as the sun sails into view. The Latin of her name translates to “gilded-silver-face.”
