okay so @/girlfumbler pointed out on twitter that will is spying (which i also picked up on but i was totally unaware of how direct this parallel was omg)
but that got me thinking, and if will is possessed like this again then they'll have to break him out of it, right? just like the shed scene.
sooo...... i'm here to propose that we get another shed scene somewhere (in vol 2?). not in the shed or anywhere will would recognize, obviously, but a shed scene nonetheless. and i'm ESPECIALLY hoping for a new byler shed scene or something similar.
i mean, you can see it right? will is possessed so he'll need these same people again (possibly robin as well!) to break him out of that state. but considering it's been leaked/speculated that will's love for mike will be a focus for vecna to use against him then i think a queer focused shed scene could be really cool.
(creds to girlfumbler for all the images and sparking this idea)
New Footage Thoughts
that I'm probably a week behind on
So the new footage is super cool to see and we 1,000% are getting a making of documentary to accompany the last season (They've all but confirmed it) but a few things caught my eye and I wanted to share them with y'all here.
Portal
The portal scene is extended from the July teaser so we can see more of the room. Based on the image, it looks like the walls are exposed pipes like the lab so I bet this is Nancy and Jonathan crossing dimensions from the upside down lab. The walls might also be columns like in a church. So make of that what you will.
Unintentional Trip
The new scene with Dustin and the walkie (with Jancy in the background) provides greater insight into whether or not this group planned to go into the upside down or if it was their only choice/best chance at survival. Based on how Dustin is reacting here, looking like he's trying (and failing) to communicate with the other side, and how Nancy is just sitting on the stoop, I have to believe that going to the upside down was not the plan. If it were, Nancy would not be sitting there waiting/scheming, she'd be ready to take action.
Okay. I'm at a point where I can actually think about this finale.
Stranger Things S5 fucking sucks.
This post is exclusively talking about queer representation. I will probably do a separate one talking about the overall story of the episode and ST.
Queer representation in this show is done so badly, and they are explicitly used to further the straight ships and male characters (which btw, do NOT get me started on Stranger Things and its representation of women). Robin's character starts out seeming to be set up to be another romance plot for Steve, thankfully, they didn't do that and instead make her a lesbian; her coming out scene is great, I love it, I don't love how her queerness is used pretty much exclusively to further Steve's character. Yes, we do get some development regarding Robin and her acceptance of her own queerness, however, that is quite limited (fucking Tammy Thompson) and instead her coming out and Steve not being a dick about it, seems more to revolve around Steve's character changing to not be a dick anymore.
Prior to this, Robins queerness isn't addressed, and the struggles she faces as a queer person in America at this time are not even hinted at much. Then, going in to S4, Robin is more openly queer, she's talking with Steve about women and her crush on Vickie. This is good, however, it's so short lived it might as well not matter. We get an okayish scene with Vickie where Robin makes a dumb joke and we get that tie back to her best friend Steve (because reminder, he's a nice guy now!) and fucking Tammy Thompson. Then, we basically ignore Vickie for the rest of the time until oops random scene to let you know that she has a boyfriend, and then the ending scene which sets up hope for a development of romance between Vickie and Robin (again, featuring Steve). My main issue, is how in a show which is pretty well known for having different view points, especially regarding showing the development of relationships between characters, think Stancy/Jancy scenes, Jopper, etc;. We get fucking NOTHING for robin and vickie. All of Robin and Vickie's relationship develops of screen. They don't do this for any other relationship, specifically the only canon queer relationship and they get absolutely nothing.
Even in S5 where you get more of Robin and Vickie, it seems more like it's put in there to just say that there were gay people in the show- and that fucking epilogue where they completely discard Vickie and then have a suddenly much more feminine Robin really irked me.
Part of what I loved about Robin's character, was her queerness, that was integral to who she was and I found that it was reflected in how she dressed; you see after she accepts herself and comes out to Steve that she becomes more relaxed and open, she dresses more masculine, she just looks 'more gay'. For them, in the epilogue, to have her be suddenly and pretty drastically more feminine was just- idk. I think in culmination with all the other aspects of this show that make it bad queer representation, i really didn't like it. It felt more like the duffers were pushing the idea that they had 'grown up and moved on' and specifically part of Robin's moving on was becoming more feminine, more 'womanly'. Now combine this again with societal and media's dislike of butch and masc women... You can see what I'm getting at? Then to completely remove Vickie? Yeah.
Then, we have Robins queerness being used to push Wills character. Now, I did actually quite like this at first. Robin shows Will that he's not alone, she helps him accept himself, gives him community (and queer community is vitally important). I fucking adored this for the first part of S5, it was so cute and I liked how they both had Robin and Vickie explicitly as a couple, and then used this to show Will that it was okay and that he too could have love. Then it all blew up in flames. For whatever reason, Robin and Wills relationship goes no further than her saying 'its okay to be gay' and then this immediately pushes will to come out to EVERYONE after he is threatened into doing so by his fucking abuser. Will doesn't come out on his own terms, it's a theatrical and anxiety riddled coming out scene where he is borderline hysterical because he is forced to do this by his abuser. Then. THEN. He compares the love he feels for Mike, his best friend, the heart, his god damn anchor, to Robins fleeting crush on Tammy god damn Thompson. They reduce Will's feelings to an actual, literal, joke.
Then it's over, you get a pathetic coming out scene which looks like it's out of a shitty Disney movie (quite obviously written by straight people) and the comparison of Wills feelings to a joke.
Then the finale comes out, we all had limited hopes by this point but oh my god. What the fuck. Firstly, any sort of hint at byler is assassinated, we get one scene (the best friends one) which is pretty much the writers laughing at everyone. Then they give Will and epilogue boyfriend and that's it done dusted. Furthermore, Mike's relationship with El is also poorly done; they had the potential to tell the story of a boy dealing with compulsory heterosexuality and having to confront his feelings for his best friend, while trying to maintain a relationship with a girl he's not in love with. Instead. They just completely assassinated his character, they couldn't settle on Byler or Mileven so they chose neither, Mike barely seems to give a shit about El until she dies (doesn't even say I love you back) and then stays in Hawkins writing stories while he's unable to go out and break the cycle. Mike's arc, is that he doesn't get out, he doesn't find happiness with/without El and manage to move past the loss of his beloved girlfriend, nor is it the acceptance of his self identity and him going on to live his own life. No. Mike Wheeler lives every queer persons worst nightmare, he is alone.
Also don't get me started on the stonathan, ronance, curry thing- cause yeah it's funny and also as a ronance shipper LORD I loved that final scene, but also I am aware enough to tell you that they're fucking cowards. They hint at Nancy's queerness pretty openly, but they give plausible deniability because having queer characters who have happiness just, isn't marketable. Hell, tbh I think the only reason we got as heavily implied ronance as we did was because of how hard both Maya and Natalia were pushing for it.
The ST5 epilogue graduation scene felt like the ending of Grease, where Sandy and Danny randomly fly off into the sky and everyone on the ground is smiling and waving like it's normal

Volume 1 thoughts from somebody who's a little stupid all the time sometimes and a massive Byler
I always preface these types of posts with this but, I'm absolutely horrible at analyzing, putting things into words, or expressing myself properly. So this is all going to be me yapping with no substance, just pure nonsense. Some may say it's self deprecating but I think it's acknowledging myself where I am and my abilities.
That said, I have a lot of thoughts on Season 5 Volume one of Stranger Things. If you haven't watched it, than...oopsies! Spoilers ahead!!!
Curing my own byler doubt
My interpretation on the coming out scene from Mike’s perspective
I firstly want to clarify that I did not like this scene AT ALL.
One thing is Will feeling like he’s forced to come out, out of fear, but WHY DUFFERS? WHY IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CAST?
And I also know that the Duffers are literally good writers? They’ve proven that so far with the show - so what the hell are they doing here?
(This will also mostly go over Mikes part in this, I won’t really go over Will’s switch up in faith and stuff like that! Not for now. )
Will is an unreliable narrator, so when he says “I know that they’re not like me” we can’t trust him at all. That is what he thinks and we already knew this. This isn’t new information, it just feels like it is cause it’s finally acknowledged, but really, this proves nothing. We still know nothing about Mike’s feelings and there are still things that haven’t been revealed, so all we can do is interpret his reactions and how it fits the narrative in general. WHICH leads me to these framing and focus choices. “I don’t like girls”
Mike’s in focus, Dustin and Lucas are out of focus. We are supposed to pay attention to his reaction. Meaning, that the little adjustment he did, was probably very intentional.
“I mean I do, just not like you guys do”
Here however, Lucas and Dustin are in focus, while Mike is not only half out of frame, he’s also noticeably out of focus.
And people can argue saying “Well, obviously they show Mike’s reaction, cause Will is quite literally talking about him.” which is true, yes, but that just proves my point with the second clip further. Why would they shift focus point, if what Will says refers to who’s cut to?
To further back this up I also realised that it is definitely intentional, cause when Will was talking about having Vecna inside your head, it cuts directly to Max and when he mentions Tammy, it cuts to Robin.
And look it might all be really obvious - cause duh, of course it is - but think about it. What does that say about Mike?
And don’t even get me started on this clip. HE GULPS.
“And it just makes me feel like something's wrong with me. So I push you away. And for the rest of us, we just drift apart more-“
He looks like he’s on the verge of crying - and yes, so is the rest of the group, it’s an emotional scene. But this is Mike. Mike, who has shown little to no emotion this whole season and I would even go as far as saying that he looks like he understands. Something is switching in him and will die on that hill.
Maybe it’s the realisation that he’s also afraid of drifting apart, maybe it’s the intensity of the speech, maybe it’s because someone is openly confessing and opening up about all of the same struggles he’s been dealing with, the exposure kind of forcing him to look inwards - maybe it’s all three - I don’t know.
But what I do know, is that canon Mike is afraid of what Will's saying: drifting apart = “and I don’t know, maybe I feel like I lost you or something.”
Now with the confirmation that we know that Mike knows about Will’s feelings - Which, by the way is not something most people would catch onto (at least not know for certain) if not the Duffers had confirmed it in that interview.
And it makes me even more confident in that we are supposed to read into his reaction. Finn is a great actor and his micro expressions are great, but it’s still just acting, this isn’t a real situation, so as an audience it can be difficult to tell apart whether you’re supposed interpret something or if it’s just the actor.
I don’t know if im making any sense… I sound delusional
LASTLY
“I’m not afraid anymore” Cuts directly to Mike, who’s nodding..
THEY ARE SPELLING IT OUT FOR US. IT CAN’T GET CLEARER THAN THIS.
Wait wait wait wait wait so for Jopper it’s night so we can see the lights are on…(established couple) but for Byler the lights aren’t on…(day) —>YET<— (yet to be established). But the signal exists. (This part is cornplating but: eventually day will turn to night so the lights HAVE to turn on #metaphor or symbolism whatever that’s a bit of a reach though)
mayhaps also connecting to the ending of ep4 with the flashing car lights behind Mike looking at Will. (Bonus points it’s night) Like finally it’s going to happen and the flashing lights showing that finally Mike isn’t going to be an oblivious repressed empty headed moron anymore (sorry mike)
I wasn’t really sure how to word this but do you get where I’m leading?
