in a systematic whump scenario, whether BBU, slave whump, whatever worldbuilding that creates a "class of whumpees". Two people, one who's very used to their situation in life, maybe even believes in the ideology that decrees they're lesser, the other resisting the "natural order" and demanding the freedom to choose. Naturally those around them see fit to remind the second one of their place. I'll leave it to you to fill in the torment of your choice, but the example in mind was branding.

As the second one is on the ground, clutching their head and writhing in pain, the first one comes over to comfort them. Stroking their head that's drenched with sweat, giving them a shoulder to lean on as they shake and sob.

"This is our place, friend," the first one soothes, sadly, "Suffering is our lot in life."

Imagine a whump story told entirely from the pov of an outside character. Not Caretaker per se, because they always end up deeply entangled.

I'm talking about someone who knows whumpee kind of, maybe is a neighbor or a coworker, maybe they petsit.

Someone who's involved just enough to know whumpee but not enough to feel like they can ask without being intrusive.

Maybe the character catches glimpses/noises, all those awkward signals that are easier to ignore out of fear of offending whumpee (surely whumpee would ask if they need help, they have friends, etc.) maybe they do go to broach the topic and whumpee pushes it aside.

When Leader and the team break in and find Whumpee, unconscious and in high danger. Caretaker reaches him before anyone else, clutching him to their chest.

Leader approaches Caretaker and goes to take Whumpee away to take him to the hospital. And just-- Caretaker instinctively pulls Whumpee a little closer to themself. Yes, whumpee needs help, but he's alive, and they never thought they'd see him again.

Leader is stuck in a tense negotiation situation and needs to make a tough choice, "one versus many" scenarios. They give Whumpee over to the other side. But Whumpee didn't know they were on the table to be bartered with, and plead/beg Leader not to sell them out. But the situation is too hostile, sudden, etc, and Whumpee gets taken away.

Maybe Leader thinks they can get Whumpee back, or can counternegotiate if they just play for time. Or maybe they just don't care. Whumpee was that one person who complicated things, or Leader had a personal axe to grind with them. Maybe they secretly wanted to teach Whumpee a lesson.
