biography
Jane Hayward was not a disappointment. Or at least that’s what she told herself no matter how many times her parents looked at her with less light in their eyes than they looked at their other children. With both her older brothers following in their parents footsteps, Jane was the obvious black sheep. Even so, she tried her hardest to earn the respect and love of her parents that she deserved. As a lawyer and doctor, it was expected for them to be a bit cold at times and Jane was no stranger to the frequent breeze during family dinners, but none of that mattered to her. She saw it as what it was: an obstacle to defeat and later include in a memoir if she so chose to.
For years she threw herself into being the perfect child, volunteering at the hospital where her mother worked, and sitting silently while her father won case after case. But it was far too easy to grow bored with her lifestyle and one day, Jane decided she was done with it. She wanted to do her own thing; find something to call her own. Of course until she had a definitive something, it was scrubs and courtrooms. Though, with her parents finally caving in and letting her attend public school, she knew that her “something” wouldn’t take long to find.
Being the new girl was always hard, but for Jane it was impossible to deal with; she was simply unapproachable. She was always too tall, too argumentative, and no one ever knew where they stood with her. Not exactly sure where she went, Jane opted to stick to the things she knew despite not enjoying them as much. Everything changed, however, when she walked into her first drama club meeting. It was as if the minute she stepped foot into the room, sparks went off– far more than what she felt playing pretend bar exam as a child.
Being on stage and making a complete fool of herself at times felt nothing short of magical. However, when word of her extracurricular activities reached her parents, there was hell to pay. In their minds, Jane was wasting her time with something as frivolous and dead ended as acting. Wanting to honor her parents’ wishes, Jane intended to quit. Finding herself unable to, Jane continues to put on the best act of her career yet: lying to her parents.
