#ss utopia

Warning: not for the fair of heart or homophobic and on that note probably don’t follow me if you’re homophobic

So this is a horror podcast anthology that’s does have an overarching story going on, but it’s not revealed until a good deal in.  Each of the four seasons that are out so far tell a very different story, and they’re all great so far.  They are surprisingly gory for being audio, which is impressive in and of its own right, but it’s still kinda bad sometimes.  All in all, it’s super underrated and more people around here should listen to it.

The SS Utopia: This story takes the form of a psychology grad student producing a podcast for his thesis about a set of found tapes from a sunk ship. The tapes were part of a psychologist’s experiment on a ship sometime around one of the world wars whose goal was to escape the chaos of the outside world, and he’s studying the effects of the isolation, and Max, the grad student, is in turn studying these tapes, which managed to survive the strange sinking of the SS Utopia.  Over the course of the season, Max becomes more and more invested in the stories of the doomed passengers aboard the ship and things on the ship slowly deteriorate in worse and worse ways.  This season is pretty good; the only crappy part is that you know that all of the passengers on the boat will die at the end, but it’s still so easy to get invested in them.  

Blackchapel: Finally, an appropriately queer wild west story, because really, all of history is more queer than most of history will tell you, the wild west included.  In this story, a band of misfits gathered together by a sheriff must hunt down a serial killer going by The Savior who seems to be targeting the sheriff and his town specifically, using a group of religious fanatics going by the Apostles.  This is probably my favorite season, and it’s ending is much happier than SS Utopia.  It also has a rocking soundtrack, and the whole vibe is great.  Almost all of the characters are so wonderful and I love them, especially Wyatt.  Great season.

The Neon Lodge: Demons?  In your cyberpunk capitalist hellscape??  It’s more likely than you think.  911 operator Kesha starts receiving horrific phone calls that grow more and more personal and slowly uncovers the existence of demons in her city.  Also has a pretty rocking soundtrack, but the sheer number of demons is a little confusing and hard to keep them straight, since a lot of them have similar voices.  On the bright side, the cutest lesbian couple.  The ending is kinda unsatisfying, but it’s still worth it.

As soon as "The Parting Glass" is put in anything, i get this bittersweet nostalgia and usually cry like a loser.

That whole death scene was heart wrenching (NO PUN INTENDED). I just related to the whole sibling dynamic on a level, man. Hi, home, do you feel struck?

Then Darla ASKING to just die was enough

I love how they made it seem like she was the most vulnerable person to Maelseph but nope. She's a total badass till the end.

Also, I feel for the doc, I mean

Fucking wow.

The opening/ending of the episode-- *confused screaming* Is this a thing that's going to carry into Black Chapel?? Who were they? Test simulators?? Was none of it real? Aahhh!

IN SUMMARY

The Blood Crow Stories is brilliant and owes me a new heart. Very little shows have spooked me. This one DID. It TOTALLY AND SHAMELESSLY pandered to my tastes in horror (Lovecraft especially I mean - basically an Elder God), was SUPER gay and shamelessly so. I loved Season 1.
