Okay, you know what? No more vague-tagging and blanket statements. I’m just going to come out and say it.
I think the way softestvirgil acts around people making deceit sympathetic and shipping him is entirely inappropriate.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. And there will always be people who say “I don’t like that ship”. Hell, I know someone who doesn’t like Logicality.
But do they go out of their way to ruin the fun of Logicality shippers? No. They keep it to themselves and avoid Logicality content.
Now, don’t misunderstand, I totally get that Virgil likes to see Deceit as he is canonically; the villain. I get they don’t ship him with anyone. That’s fine, I don’t care about that. They can do what they want.
But they’re a big blog. One of the biggest in the fandom if I recall, and they have a lot of influence.
As someone who likes to see Deceit in every light, and someone who likes to ship him with the others, when I see posts that started out as harmless fun turn into “Gross, no, I don’t ship Deceit so stop it” I feel like that’s saying “Anyone who ships the villain with the others is wrong and disgusting”.
As I said, Virgil has a really popular blog. It’s inevitable that people are going to comment things they don’t agree with. Does that mean they have to read those things and reply? Of course not. Even I get comments/reblogs I don’t like, but I don’t respond unless it has something to do with an exclusionist or a (insert identity)phobe. It’s a lot easier to just keep scrolling than it is to take the time to write a comment, not to mention less stressful because idk about y’all but that kind of thing always gives me anxiety.
If they were genuinely triggered by Deceit, that would definitely warrant this behavior. No one deserves to have their triggers brought up in their posts without their consent. But this isn’t a trigger, this is a preference, maybe a squick (in the sympathetic Deceit sense). If we all just started threatening to delete posts and telling people not to add things to our posts just because we didn’t like it, half the posts that have gained infamy on this site for their content wouldn’t exist.
Someone (I’m not going to say who. I don’t even remember their url) said to Virgil “I’ll just keep my ships to myself”. I’m sorry, but does no one else see the problem here? Virgil’s comments have made Deceit stans and shippers so uncomfortable, they feel like they have to keep it to themselves! That is not the kind of fandom we should be, people. There is nothing unhealthy or dangerous about making Deceit sympathetic or shipping him, so there is absolutely no excuse for making those who do feel like they need to keep their behavior a secret, or make them feel like it’s bad.
Whether Virgil intends it or not - and I know they don’t, they’re a wonderful person - their behavior is feeding into the subconscious fandom-wide ideal that Deceit lovers are toxic and bad, and I’m done staying quiet about it.
