A day of human kindness for those experiencing homelessness because everyone deserves to be loved. Join The #WayfarerFoundation for the #6thAnnualSkidRowCarnivalofLove on Saturday, January 25, 2020!! The annual Skid Row Carnival of Love (#SRCOL) is the largest event of its kind serving 4,000 people experiencing #homelessness in and around #DowntownLos Angeles. Powered entirely by volunteers, the Carnival provides vital resources like health checks, haircuts and ID cards alongside music, entertainment and balloons in a 20,000 square-foot block party. Yesterday I was lucky enough to spend the day at Skid Row Carnival of Love, a day that’s solely about human connection and kindness. An initiative founded by @justinbaldoni in 2015, the Carnival Of Love is a day to shine a light on the often ignored and unfairly stigmatized individuals experiencing homeless on Skid Row. This day is about remembering that there is no “us” or “them”. That we are all one, we are all equal. And we should treat each other as such. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow. . Amongst the countless services being offered for guests, from legal, housing, and medical to crafts, dancing, music, food, and clothes, our @diffeyewear team offered reading glasses, sunglasses, and eye exams. So often we overlook the impact of the most basic tools in our lives, from our phones and our contact lenses to the bed we sleep on and the roof over our head. To hug Reggie, in his LA Rams sweatshirt, and to see his excitement when he put on his +2.75 reading glasses for the first time and could finally read the fine print on my volunteer map - “RESTAURANT. BBQ and Gourmet Meals!” - as he laughed with joy and said he was happy to be able to see his phone again, was something I’m grateful to have experienced. And Rosario, who could thread her needle again. And the several other guests who shared their time, patience, stories, and love with me, even if only for a moment, who made the day one to remember. . A big shoutout to the @thewayfarerfoundation team and every company, volunteer, guest, and donor who helped make this year’s SRCOL come together. To the open arms that welcomed me in throughout the day, embraced me, and reminded me I was wearing a “FREE HUGS” sign. To the DIFF team who never fails to come together, give back, and work together to give back in our community. And most of all, an even bigger thank you to the community of Skid Row, and all of the individuals welcomed all of us “strangers” into your home, your space, and and let us spend the day with you while we shared our time, stories, and energy together.
