So, Failboat, civilian name "Daniel", wasn't born a meta. Him becoming a meta was a result of an accident during his childhood involving a certain friend who shall not be named (it's DougDoug).

Doug wanted to see if his manipulation of technology could extend into other things by physically imbuing objects with what he called "hard-light coding".

All this did was super-heat a piece of gum until it exploded, most of it landing in Daniel's hair. The more they tried to remove it, the more it spread in his hair.

In a panic, when they heard the doorknob jiggle, Doug quickly slapped a sailor hat over Daniel's head. Of course, this didn't fool Dan's mom when bubble gum was still stuck to parts of the wall, floor, and ceiling.

That night, when Daniel tried to remove the hat from his head, he of course found it stuck. Cleaning that gum out of his hair was going to be such a nightmare. Man, he hoped soap would be enough and he wouldn't have to resort to shaving his head.

To his credit, he didn't start panicking until the hat began glowing.

When the light dimmed, the sailor hat had become a shower cap with bubbles floating out of the top. He just kept staring at himself in the mirror until he grabbed his phone to call Doug.

"...hm? Yeah, Dan?"

"Dude, my mom is going to kill you."

Fast forward several years, and he's a decently successful hero that goes by the name of FB with the ability to gain powers based on the form his hat takes. He gets along decently well with the rest of his team members (GG, FY, and JM), even getting lunch with them sometimes while they're off the clock.

His preferred calls are rescue missions, but his abilities make him decently well-rounded and able to adapt to any scenario. He doesn't really enjoy fighting villains, especially since some of his childhood friends are vigilantes (no matter how much Doug tries to call himself a villain).

He's run into Vernias once or twice, and other than his team and childhood friends, Vernias is the only other person to know his civilian identity (an accident caused by flying practice going wrong).

His civilian attire isn't anything special, but he does keep his hat with him at all times, usually disguised as a sailor hat or a cap. After a lot of practice and acquiring different types of enhanced fabrics, he's figured out how to get his clothes to match with the form his hat takes, if only in color. No matter how the clothes shift, a little dingy can always be visibly seen on his chest when he's in hero mode.

For real though, on the eldritch horror front, I personally operate on the idea that he’s very powerful, but not well-practiced. What he’s shown so far is the result of a lot of trial and error and maybe a few scrambled minds, whoops. His games may be a little scuffed but that’s just part of the charm! His brand of magic! Or whatever this is! It’s fine, he’s got it under control!

Of course, he’s not that good at pretending to be a human, either. (A nonhuman character? Wanting more than anything to be considered human? Coming from me? How shocking! <- said while side-eyeing my WIPS) Most just assume he’s putting on an act, or he’s been working too hard, or any number of things that make more sense than ‘godlike being wishes to play D&D’.

Some have still managed to figure him out, even without special eyes. They might assume he’s ancient, or omnipotent. He can’t hear their thoughts, but he can tell when someone is internally yelling at him to quit reading their mind. It’s always only a matter of time before they turn on him, thinking he’s Up To Something Evil™. There’s surely no other reason something like him would want to keep mortals around.

So why hasn’t Nick said anything yet?

"Okay, you have to admit I looked pretty cool striking that dragon down," Sophist prattled on, adding dramatic flourish to his movements as the group kept walking.

Brent rolled his eyes and lightly shoved him, but any further words soon became drowned out by the rising of Nick's nerves.

Noah had looked at him today. No, not Noah. Whatever was pretending to be Noah. Whatever it was, it stared through his soul. He felt perceived in a way like when he gets too bored and watches an ant crawl across the ground.

Of course, there's a difference. An ant already knows its purpose. It already knows the direction its heading and what it will do when it reaches it. Still, there is something almost calming about watching something so simple perform a basic task.

He'd only rolled an 18. But the roll was stressful. It determined whether he had the strength to pull Brent from the lava or not. To say that he was grateful was an understatement, but after he saved his friend, that's when felt it.

Do ants ever know they're being perceived?

He tried to ignore it, to brush it off and celebrate his victory, but the feeling was so present, so bright in his eyes and in his mind that he couldn't help but shudder quietly.

All at once, the feeling vanished. Nick felt like he could breathe again, but he fell quiet for the rest of the game.

Maybe it was a blessing ants could only perceive what they're meant to. Having questions with no answers did nothing for his still-scrambled nerves, even as Brent's laughter cut through his thoughts.

Nick looked up as they were walking to see Vernias pouting. When they locked eyes, the shorter man lit up, though. "You don't think healing the princess was dumb, right Nick? She was injured! And we were supposed to save her!"

He tried to open his mouth for a witty retort, but nothing came out as he thought back to that intrusive feeling. Instead, he only shook his head and kept walking forward, causing the others to quiet down.

"Uh, Nick? You okay, buddy?" Sophist offered a bit clumsily.

Nick tried to laugh it off, but it came out halfhearted. "Yeah, just tired. I think I played too much and didn't touch enough grass today."

Vernias shot him a concerned look, but didn't press as Sophist continued rambling about the adventure from today. He couldn't know. None of them could know. Nick didn't want them to know.

Specifically, the idea of Nick having the smallest bust and being insecure about it. She swears she's at least bigger than Vernias (and also says Vern's pec muscles are cheating).

Because there's:

Noah, the eldritch being that he is

Nick, the one who can see through Noah's disguise

and now

Sophist, who tends to be a bit more clever than he lets on. He might not have the same abilities as Nick, but he knows there's something different about games where he chooses to be a wizard. He feels different when he plays as a wizard compared to a more casual game like simple trivia or a generic board game.

On the one hand, he should probably be more concerned how his hands gets a bit more numb every time he becomes a wizard.

He knows for certain he doesn’t like being seen by humans. They’re not meant to look under his mask. He’s not meant to lift the mask. That’s just how it is… probably. His saving grace is that his human facade has a very good poker face. No one would be able to tell he’s not happy about being perceived… aside from whoever’s doing the perceiving.

He’s not trying to scare Nick when he’s watching- the downside to working with groups is that it’s hard to get anyone alone long enough to say something, and it’s almost more trouble than it’s worth to let more people know than necessary. They’ll dance around it for as long as it takes. Noah’s got time, and he certainly doesn’t have a better idea.

(But can Nick hold back for much longer?)

I will admit, I have spent quite a few days staring at this ask. I really enjoy the concept. So much so that I had wanted to attempt a drabble of sorts out of it, but I do not yet know how to write Noah.

But Noah truly does have all the time in the world. In this case, that might be both a blessing and a curse.

…

I almost forgot. I wanted to address this today because I had the idea of whenever they return to their regular realm, most of the group believes it to have been a board game (or something similar) that they would have played with Noah.

The others chalk it up to Noah being a good host that makes them feel immersed in the game. Vernias is always left confused when Nick tenses up after every game session, though. He's just asking if he liked the game, after all.
