man i hate having really strong opinions about the writing in romantasy books cause like
they're popcorn
they are not meant to be taken super seriously, or do anything other than entertain and titillate
but goddamn it sometimes you see a choice in the writing and it's just. do you care at all for the craft? it's not wrong, per se, but god does the word choice and turns off phrase just seem lazy and incurious. did no one in editing and revisions flag that?
and i don't mean quite as pedantic as 'why is there champaign if theres no france' but like. maybe a couple levels up.
why would your horrifyingly-impoverished mc who doesnt know what roses smell like make nothing but comparisons to various precious gems. why would your differently impoverished mc from a small backwater use the word theraputic for her late night walks. baby carrots aren't a real thing they're just normal carrots shaved down and packaged and if you imply their existance in your medieval fantasy im gonna side eye you.
like i don't need you to do Tolkien level world building i just need you to think for a second about how your characters experience the world for two seconds and how that would be reflected in their narritive voice
underrated fantasy book trope of slowly but surely realising that what a word is usually describing is actually something very different in this world
im talking about how in the stormlight archives you realise you have no fuching idea what they mean when they are talking about trees and grass
or how in witch king the riding animals called horses will start being described as having claws and like hunting prey
its such a fun way to put you off kilter and feeling like a world is much more alien, by making you think you have a common reference point only to pull the rug out from under you
I will not lie, going from Parade of Horribles straight into Platform Decay should have been a much harder transition than it should have been but both Carl and Murderbot are very similar at their cores and the thematic elements arent that far apart
I think they would deeply respect everything the other has going on but utterly hate the wrenches both of them keep throwing in plans

look i deeply love audiobooks, and i am deeply enjoying the one i am currently listening, but sometimes you just get weird misspeakings, or narrators with no cohesive idea of how to pronounce a name, or just deeply odd pronounciations that make you ask if there was anyone on the production team paying attention or if they just sent the va's a script and said job done?
ah i have hit the part of the book where i have gotten inexplicably anxious about the plot and start considering looking up full spoiler summaries so i can have the assurance i need to continue. the totally normal part of the book reading process that everyone experiences
while i really loved The Chosen and The Beautiful by Nghi Vo, especially for really wonderfully approaching the very precarious place of being visibly different while being raised in a very white culture and the alienation on all sides that comes with it, i imagine it would have been even better if I had, at any point in my life, actually read the great gatsby
but its too late this is the canon version of gatsby in my brian now
