“you should match with us. it’ll be fun!” the twins had told you. and, well.. you had agreed to do so. i mean, why wouldn’t you? they were your best friends. there was nothing wrong with best friends matching. even if matching swimsuits wasn’t what best friends typically did. you three were extremely close, and all of your friends knew it.
however, the moment you walked onto the beach, into anyone’s view, one of the first thoughts to cross their minds were different variations of realization that you all were matching. one of the second thoughts would be along the lines of, are they dating? before it was quietly brushed away and not spoken aloud.
until now, that is.
hazel was always so blunt. and after having spent the entire afternoon watching you three not stray far from one another, she’d had enough of staying silent. and if she thought her friends were dating, she was going to be the first one to ask about it if nobody else was.
“so,” hazel stopped in front of you. you had come back to your towel to grab your sunscreen, meaning to apply another layer just for extra measures. you didn’t want to risk getting sunburnt.
“yes?” you glanced up from your bag.
“you and the twins..” she trailed off. “are you dating?”
the question startled you. you stared at her for a few seconds. processing.
“what? no!” you say, surprised. “we’re not- why would you think-” the words fumbled over one another as you tried to form a proper sentence. it was just making everything look worse.
“you can be honest,” she told you.
“i- i am! i swear!”
“you’re matching with them. in swimwear.”
oh. so that’s what this was about? “w- well, i needed new swimwear and they mentioned how it’d be fun to match-!” you tried to explain.
“uh huh.” she looked unconvinced.
“you can ask them!” you spoke quickly, wishing you’d disappear beneath the sand under your feet.
“i will.” she turned away, walking toward where the twins were playing in the water. you watched helplessly, unsure of what to do. you just hoped they’d clear everything up.
you swallowed thickly, just trying to go back to reapplying sunscreen. you opened the bottle, before another familiar voice drifted into your orbit.
“sooo,” pink grinned, standing just a few feet behind you. “you and the twins..”
“are very good friends.” you turned to face her.
“is that what you told hazel?” she asked.
“yes. why do you all think we’re dating?”
“can you blame us? i mean, we all know you’re such close friends, but even friends don’t match like this.” she pointed out.
“i needed a new swimsuit. they said it’d be fun,” you shrug.
“but you went along with it.”
“because they’re my best friends.”
she looked just as unconvinced as hazel. “weeelll, i’d talk to them about it if i were you. have fun, okay?” she hugged you tightly for a few seconds before turning away, bounding over to red and chloe.
talk to them? why would she suggest that? you finished applying your sunscreen quickly, shoved the bottle back into your bag, and headed over to the twins, where it seemed hazel had just finished talking to them.
you passed one another as you walked closer, and she shot you a look. the same look you’d received from pink when she told you to talk to the twins. she said nothing, just strolled past silently.
the twins watched you approach, more tense than you’d ever seen them before. the second you opened your mouth, they beat you to speaking first.
they tripped over their words, apologies spilling from their lips, embarrassment evident. they looked so guilty, an almost identical expression on both of their faces, that it made you instantly soften. as you always did with them.
“it’s okay.” you cut in. “i just.. didn’t realize everyone would think we’re dating because of this.” you admit.
a sheepish look appeared on squirmy’s face. “we.. had an idea that they might.”
you blinked, frozen for a minute. “what?” the one word had to be forced out.
“we’re sorry,” squeaky cut in quietly. “we just..” he couldn’t look you in the eyes.
“we really like you.” squirmy finished, wincing as if immediately expecting rejection.
“oh.” you couldn’t find the words, and it seemed the two of them, considering your lack of response, took it as the rejection they had assumed they’d get.
apologies started again, but you finally spoke up once more. “you don’t have to apologize.” you stepped closer. “i’m happy you told me.” you admitted softly. “to be honest,” you started, nerves pricking at the corners of your mind, “i like you guys too.”
and while none of you said anything else, the three of you instantly wrapped one another in a big hug, silly smiles spread across all of your faces.
