Post spring blizzard
Rural Wilton, North Dakota
April 25, 2022
That moment when you see your horse after a blizzard for the first time in 24 hours (when you usually see him three times a day), and though your arms are full of hay, he ignores it, nickering and putting his head over your shoulder to rub against you. Yes, Chester. We made it through another storm.
The highway out of town. Everything is plowed well, but with the drifting it was still tough going.
The road to Chester's barn (the long building straight ahead). Yeah, even with 4-wheel-drive, I wasn't going to try that. I walked in.
My hay and feed bin. The joys of boarding your horse outside. I still think the horses are happier, but it makes more work for me, that's for sure!
Chester after he finally let me put the hay down. He gets some on the ground, the rest in hay nets that I hang. I was very pleased there wasn't much drifting inside the shelter compared to storms earlier this winter. I am so done with snow, and I think Chester is, too!
Really wishing I could bring Chester home and keep him in the garage for the duration.
Well, I am done with work for the week! I was scheduled for today, but the roads still suck. Where it's not drifted over it's super icy. My wonderful boss left it up to me and I elected to stay home. It doesn't help that my barn neighbor and I had to slog almost 1/4 mile through knee high drifts, carrying water, to the horses this morning because two of the automatic waterers are frozen. I am wiped out! But now I am free until Monday, ready to sleep, write, read, and (when it warms up tomorrow) spend time with my horse and dog. Just one more cold night and spring will finally arrive! Happy Easter!

Very quiet morning. Everything in the Black Hills area is shut down. The Interstate is closed. The airport is closed. The wind hasn't started, yet. My friend has been to the barn and all is well there; I'm going to try and make it in this afternoon. Talked to my boss and she's okay with me not coming, as it's supposed to be a slow day anyway, if anyone can even get there. My anxiety has my head hurting and I'm nauseous. Guess I'm gonna go back to bed...
Still not bad here in town, but the wind has picked up east of us and the southern Hills already have about 14 inches. I have several friends who ranch; they've moved their herds in close, but they are calving right now, so they are more than a little stressed right now.
Life is like an ice-cream cone, you have to lick it one day at a time.

On the bright side, I got another chapter finished. Time for some more Sudafed and the last episode of Moon Knight to go to bed to. I'll be plum happy if it stays decent in town and I can get to Chester in the morning, but I'm not going to be upset if I don't have to work, either!
The snow started about an hour ago. Chester has about 2 days worth of hay in his shelter; hopefully he won't eat it all before tomorrow. Now to just wait and see what tomorrow brings...
