All you wanted for Halloween was to have a fun and enjoyable day with your little brother. You’d even set up a route through the houses with the least frightening decor because you knew your little brother would be scared and it would ruin your night. All you wanted was to delight your brother, that wasn’t asking too much, was it?
Evidently, it was, since Minho and his friends decided that your night shouldn’t have just treats and they played a trick. If it weren’t enough that they had wiped out the route you had created by putting some cones and a ribbon in the way of people walking down one of the streets, they basically created a house of horrors in the middle of the alternative street they were forcing everyone to pass.
Your little brother became so afraid of the boys’ fantasies that he let go of your hand and shrank over the staircase, crying desperately. You were so sorry for your brother and the other kids who were falling into that trap, and so angry at the people who were doing it that you didn’t even think twice before pulling one of the loose ends of the mummy costume and running in front of the others, knocking them all down before they could scare anyone else.
Minho was the first to take off the mask and that’s how you discovered it was him and his friends who were playing that stupid trick. As soon as he saw you, his brows, which were furrowed with anger at having someone spoiling their joke, quickly relaxed and he held onto the other boys who also seemed to have been annoyed because they were thrown to the ground.
As everyone took off their masks and realized it was you who stood there with your hands on your hips, Minho opened and closed his mouth several times, trying to find some explanation for what was happening, but failing miserably.
You simply waited for them all to stand in front of you, their hands crossed in front of their body, to fetch your little brother. You didn’t even want to know Minho’s possible excuse for that joke.
As soon as he heard your voice calling his name, your brother lifted his head, and when he saw that the path to you was free of monsters, he rushed toward you. After cleaning his tears, you returned with him to where Minho and his friends were. Your little brother squeezed your hand when he saw the costumes, but he did not run again because he saw that the masks were taken.
“Now,” you said, “you can start.”
Minho’s friends started looking at each other, but Minho kept his eyes on you. Everyone was silent until one of them opened his mouth to ask what they should start. After that, everyone began to murmur questions, and one of them had the guts to ask if it was to start over the trick, but fortunately, it was enough for you to narrow your eyes at him (and Minho give a stomp on his foot) to make him shut up.
After the stomp, which was followed by a complaint of pain, they all fell silent again, and your gaze fell again on Minho, who sighed before approaching.
“Hey,” he whispered, so that only you and your brother could hear what he was saying, “there’s no need for you to do that, or to stay there looking annoyed. It was just a joke.”
“Which wasn’t funny at all,” you added, putting your hands back on your waist. But you put them down again when you felt your brother’s hand searching for yours.
“Even so,” he continued, looking away from you for a second to look at your brother, “you don’t have to be upset, why don’t you let it go? I don’t wanna fight over it.”
“You do know you just ruined my night, don’t you?” You asked, your tone getting even lower because of the restrained anger. “Do you know how hard it was to find the right houses to pass by without frightening him?” You shook your brother’s hand, making sure Minho noticed who was the most important at the time.
Minho sighed again when he saw that your brother kept his eyes wide in the direction of his friends. When he looked at you again, you simply raised your eyebrows, still waiting for an answer.
Sighing for the third time, Minho ducked in front of your brother, who quickly hid behind your leg.
“Hey, kid,” Minho greeted him with the friendly smile you liked so much. “You’re not scared of us, are you?” When your brother shook his head and said he was afraid, you couldn’t hold back the smile. “Oh, you don’t have to worry, we’re just a bunch of dumb boys who have nothing to do and we decided to play a trick.”
As Minho was no longer whispering as he spoke to your brother, his friends heard that he called them dumbs and one of them complained loud enough for you to hear, and that made you brother giggle.
Seeing the child smile, Minho’s smile grew and became fun, that childish smile that was one of the characteristics that had made you notice him on the university campus and that made you open your smile, too.
“What do you think?” Minho asked your brother. “We still have a vampire costume. Are you too old to join these dumb boys and scare some little kids?”
Surprisingly, you saw your little brother come out from behind your leg, push out his chest and respond with the confident little voice, “I can help you if you want.”
Laughing, Minho nodded and raised his hand so that your brother could give him a high five. “That’s the mood!”
Feeling happy-go-lucky with the invitation, your brother tripped to Minho’s friends as the last stood up and looked at you once more. “What do you think? You wanna join us too,” Minho looked at you from head to toe, and the childish smile turned mischievous as you watched his eyes shine, “lady devil?”
Getting closer to him, because you knew it was going to mess with him, you whispered, “No, thank you.” Then you turned and walked seductively up the stairs where his brother had cried a few minutes earlier. “Someone has to protect the kids from your tricks.”
Taking a deep breath Minho watched you, happy to have found you off campus and in a non-formal event. That Halloween night was only stating what he already suspected, that he liked you and that the reciprocal was true. “I think someone needs to protect me from you,” he whispered shortly before he felt your brother’s hand pull him back into the play.
