What do same-gendered daemons mean?
As far as I recall the general pattern of the His Dark Material series was that a person’s daemon (which is like, a manifestation of their soul but also partially a separate being) would be the “opposite” gender of their own. I forget why.Â
Of course, even by that wording you can probably tell that it doesn’t really explore gender the way it could, and there are way more applications of this that would be very fun to explore in reality.Â
Enter: the wide and varied fanbase who are interested in doing just that.Â
I’ve seen a lot of very excellent tinkering with this pattern to better reflect how people really work, so now we have ideas like people having the same gender as their daemon, or the opposite, or perhaps it’s undefined, or fluid, or irrelevant. The idea of same-gendered daemons inparticular could be interpretted in a bunch of ways depending on the individual, but for Kurogane in particular it probably aligns with the fact that he is so very very gay.
