Meta rec: Is Sam selfish or is he just functional?
Title: Personal Maturity VS the Agenda of Self Writer: dodger_winslow It fascinates me that the very discussions currently going around in fandom, relating to Sam's actions after the end of Season 7, closely mirror those which we had about Sam during the show's first season.
Sam's decision to leave the family and go to Stanford, and then during the season his stated intention to go back to college as soon as he could, divided fans on whether these actions were functional and positive, or selfish and immature.
This meta was written in May 2006, and offers insights which I think are very relevant to our current perception of Sam. As with all great metas, there are some great discussion in the comments.
