the weather couldn't have been more perfect for their town's end of summer church cook-out, the sun warming what little bare skin was visible on winnie's body while a gentle breeze rustled her gauzy skirt, blowing it up above her knees before she could smooth it down. her companion for the day wasn't exactly ideal, having given into the advances of a man in town who her parents approved of, finding him much more simple and inattentive than the man she really wanted. when she first caught the priest's eyes from across the way, however, she suddenly became a lot more glad she'd come with a date. it was subtle enough to go unnoticed by the rest of the townsfolk in attendance, but winnie caught every lingering glance he sent her way, envy just barely concealed in those forlorn eyes of his. it inspired her to play up the physical affection with her date a bit, holding his hand, allowing him to put his arm around her, gazing up at him with the same fascination she usually reserved for jude. it was a good thing her parents weren't in attendance, her mother having stayed home to take care of her father who was sick with the flu, otherwise they'd surely have chastised her for so boldly flirting in public. it wasn't until jude approached the pair that she turned her full attention on him, a bright grin on her face as she pretended to be oblivious to his obvious ire. "oh, hi father! so glad you could make it. you've met todd, haven't you? his parents own the pharmacy on bleeker street."
