Splatoon has officially been out for a year now (technically on May 29th, this post is a little late) and this is my contribution to it's anniversary. I thought the concept was pretty stupid when it first came out but honestly this game will stick with me forever. I bought a wiiU specifically to play it because a lot of my tumblr friends looked like they were having so much fun and all the art that came from this fandom inspired me to draw more often and break through my comfort zone with colors. The game itself put a new spin on shooter games in general with it's creative weapons and lack of mic communication. You're forced to tune yourself to the needs of others and come up with strategies that are good for your team instead of yourself. The game is based on how much turf you've covered with your ink and not how many kills you racked up and your teams switch every round even if you play with the same people so it's hard to hold grudges. There are no stats and the levels don't matter, you play based on skill alone and everything is fair. It's won several awards and nominated for many others. Its a game a 10 year old and a 50 year old can play together and both can have the same amount of fun. Splatfests always had me pumped and I even decided to make Fridays my day off work so I would have time to get the highest rank. This game really gave me something to look foward to and I can't thank nintendo enough for giving a concept like this a shot. It's become wildly successful and I hope they continue adding to the game and people keep playing it. They're adding 5 new amiibos and DLC for new weapons and combos soon. I honestly can't wait!
