This would be really late in the year for spindleshanks in the UK, where they’re seen into mid-autumn, but I suppose it’s warmer in South Carolina? 

The woods were awash with young fungi when I last visited - these are some baby spindleshanks, still recognisable by their close groups, distinct stem shape and wide gills. You can see the way the gorgeous, squat shapes their stems will grow into here.
