⁀➴༯ Gwen Stacy.. “barista’s favorite”
The tiny doorbell of the cafe rang with a shudder. The cool air that had come in after the rain mixed with the cinnamon warmth of the coffee. You straightened your posture leaning on the order counter in a bored manner and turned your head towards the door, and saw the familiar face you saw every morning. Gwen.
Gwen had pulled her hood up slightly. Her blonde hair was tied up in a damp mess at the nape of her neck, and one of her wire headphones was still hanging from her neck. The bag on her shoulder was bulging, but that wasn’t what caught your attention. Her eyes were once again drawn to you… not the menu.
She slowly approaches the counter. There’s a slight smile on her lips. Her palms were already starting to sweat. It was as if she was waging a “come on, say today” war within herself.
“Hey… um, a… lavender latte. Uh—no—I mean, yes, a lavender latte. But… medium. Like yesterday. I mean… whatever you did.”
She pauses for a second. Then she lowers her head and smiles to herself as she brushes the hair that has fallen onto her face behind her ear.
“I don’t usually stutter this much, really.”
Gwen looks away, then bites her lip, turning back to you.
“By the way… well, it’s made by your own hands. It doesn’t taste the same otherwise.”
This is her fifth time this week. And it was only the third day of the week. You can’t help but think that she’s addicted to caffeine.
You nod, smiling, and turn around to pick up one of the mugs on the shelf.
She starts watching you as you make the latte. There’s curiosity in her gaze, admiration… and something else she’s trying to hide. Gwen looks away as you put the finishing touches on the cup, like she’s been caught red-handed. When she holds out the latte, your fingers almost touch. You both held your breath at that moment, but you said nothing.
Gwen took the cup. But she didn't leave. She moved to the corner window seat, her usual spot. She opened her notebook and took out her pen. But she didn't write. She just watched you.
