One of the most important stops for those who went from Messina to Palermo or vice versa, was Sperlinga. Located in the heart of Sicily, Sperlinga had been inhabited since the arrival of the Sicans on the island who had dug out the huge rock that overlooked the valley. For this reason, in the Middle Ages it was enough to build only a few walls on the main entrance to have an inviolable fortress. The kings and emperors who left Palermo for Messina, stopped in Sperliga without any worries of being suddenly attacked by the Saracens or brigands. When Roger I conquered Sperlinga, he understood its importance and made the colonists who came from northern Italy and who spoke Gallic reside there. In this way the Grande Conte ensured control of the heart of Sicily and one of its most important roads, both of which were placed under the protection of a population loyal to him. The language of the new settlements of Sperlinga, Gallic, was very similar to French. It did not seem strange, therefore, that during the Sicilian Vespers, the moment in which the Sicilians rebelled against the rulers of the moment, that were the French following Charles of Anjou, some French knights and soldiers took refuge in Sperlinga to escape the murderous fury of the Sicilians that cut the throat of all those who could not say "Ciciri" (chickpeas), a word that no French could pronounce correctly in Sicilian. The French resisted the siege for a whole year until they had to capitulate and surrender. Count Natoli, who came into possession of the castle, had engraved on the castle entrance "Quod Siculis placuit, sola Sperlinga negavit" . What Sicily liked, only Sperlinga refused. For this reason, when someone opposes a decision, he is always asked ironically "Are you coming from Spillinga?"
