rehoming my geckos is something i’ve thought of doing for over a year now. ever since my first gecko, Stark, died i’ve been so anxious to own geckos. they just seem — to me — to be much more fragile than snakes such as ball pythons and colubrids. but i’m so attached to all my pets that i held off and held off and held off and i thought everything was fine until Speeka, and last weekend.

and it’s been over a week and i still haven’t cleaned out her enclosure, or even turned off her RHP.

all this to say that Speeka died quite quickly, and unexpectedly, of egg binding. she’d just eaten for me not even 48 hours before i found her limp and colorless in her enclosure. barely breathing. Hannah took her to an emergency vet for me where i paid for intensive care for hours until she passed away last Saturday afternoon. she was too weak to fight as the eggs had been stealing her calcium and had become pretty calcified as a consequence. we’d planned for surgery and everything, but she didn’t — couldn’t — hold on long enough.

and i was devestated. i felt responsible, like i had missed some cue. but she hadn’t lost or gained weight. she’d been eating, drinking, bright-eyed and energetic as always until the evening i found her. basically already gone.
