WE MADE IT, EVERYONE! While 2020 has thrown a heck of a lot of curveballs at it, Spectre Requistions 2020 batch has opened on-time and without Andromeda-level shenanigans. Please give our 2020 class some love; everyone could use some nice comments.
CHECK OUT THE COLLECTION HERE!
We will also be doing commenting bingo cards. If you want one, let us know by commenting below!
Whatâs a Commenting Bingo Card?
Commenting cards are 5x5 bingo card with a free space in the middle. The free space is meant for whatever sort of rubric you want to set; âfic that was given to meâ â a fic with Taliâ etc; the rest are different criteria based on the works in the collection. Your challenge is to read and comment on as many as you can to fill up the card, make other rare pair writers happy, and have the Space Hampster smile upon you. This year, comment cards come in two forms: safe for work and not-safe-for-work; you may ask for a card made up of SFW prompts, NSFW prompts, or a card with a combination of the two. You can see all prompts here, and can opt out of 5 prompts out of each table. (EG, if you only do a SFW or a NSFW-only card, you can opt-out of 5; if you do a SFW AND NSFW combo card, you can opt out of 10). If you get a bingo, report back, and we will make you a silly graphic and talk up your contributions after the anon period ends!

Miranda took one last look in the mirror. The gold dress fit flawlessly, of course. Carefully hidden stretch panels and pleats in the skirt assured that it didnât impede her movement in any way. She didnât have any weapons, but her biotic amp and omni-tool were well-hidden by some large but tasteful jewelry. She was no stranger to running in heels.
Still. She cocked an eyebrow at the hooded figure who sat perched on the bathroom countertop.
âItâs perfect,â Kasumi said. âAll eyes will be on you.â
âIâd be amazed if anyone makes eye contact,â Miranda said dryly.
âEven better. One of these days, I should teach you the basics of pickpocketing. Youâd be a pro in no time.â
âYou say that as though I have anywhere to put things. This handbag holds nothing.â
âNot true. It held your lipstick.â
Miranda rolled her eyes and held out her hand. Kasumi gave her the lipstick back. Miranda unclipped her purse, put the lipstick back, and said âShall we, then?â
âLetâs!â came the excited reply. Kasumi was invisible before her feet touched the floor.
There were times Miranda would kill for that kind of cloaking technology.
When they reached the reception room, she introduced herself impatiently with the false name that Kasumi had provided. She paused at the security checkpoints until she felt the ping on her wrist from her omni-tool that indicated Kasumi had moved past her. Those parts were easy. She could rehearse those steps in her head and prepare.
The next part?
Thank goodness for champagne. She snagged a glass from one of the waiters walking by. She made her way over to a large aquarium, and stood with her back to it as she scanned the room for the first target.
âThere,â she heard Kasumi whisper in her ear. âBy the fondue fountain. With the green tie. You look fabulous, by the way. Definitely best-dressed, if I was giving out awards.â The line went silent for a moment before Kasumi added, âI should give out awards at these things.â
Miranda weaved her way through the crowd to the fondue fountain, which drizzled waves of melted chocolate over an elaborate series of cascading pools.
âDo you think Shepard would let us install one on the Normandy?â Kasumi whispered into Mirandaâs ear.
Miranda rolled her eyes, then looked over the options. After weeks of eating only the types of foods that kept well on starships, a small part of her wanted to grab all of it and run. Instead, she selected a kebab that had alternating deep red strawberries with cubes of pineapple. And a napkin, just in case.
Next, the tricky part.
She approached the fountain, and held the stick at a few different angles, trying to determine the best way to maximize the amount of chocolate she got while making sure not to splash any.
âFirst time?â a voice asked. She looked up and there he was. âExcellent selection.â He gestured at her kebab.
She smirked and hoped it came across as coy. âI donât want to make a mess.â
âAllow me,â he said. She handed him the kebab, and he reached over and rolled it in one of the waves of chocolate. Then, he turned it over several times over one of the pools so the excess dripped off.
Miranda did her best not to think about proper food sanitation techniques.
âWe use a special formula so that the chocolate hardens when itâs not flowing or in the heated fountain. See?â He handed her the kebab, and, true to his word, the chocolate was no longer dripping.
âWhy thank you,â she said, thankful that at least he had only touched the stick.
âGo ahead,â he said.
She took a bite. She closed her eyes and sighed as she savored it. She opened them, and then quickly closed them again so she wouldnât look at the ever-so-slight shimmer standing behind him.
âThat is scrumptious. And you said you made it?â
He grinned. She thought this would be the difficult part, but it turned out that she didnât need to do much. She simply gave him an opening to talk about himself.
After about a minute, she heard the whisper in her ear. âGot it.â
Now the more difficult part. She smiled and nodded as he waxed philosophically about searching for the perfect planet on which to grow cacao trees.
âI said I got it.â
âThat is fascinating,â Miranda cut in when he was taking a breath. âIf youâll excuse me, though. I do need to get a refill.â She held up her empty champagne glass.
âOh, allow me,â he said, and waved over one of the waiters walking around with trays. Miranda stifled the urge to destroy him.
âAnd use the ladiesâ room.â
âAh. That I cannot help you with.â
She took a deep breath as soon as she had managed to get out of sight. Fortunately, there were enough people that she didnât have to go too far.
Kasumi materialized when she was safely in the bathroom.
âIndividual rooms. Fancy,â she observed.
âYou so owe me for this,â Miranda muttered.
Kasumi grinned. âOh, you know Iâm good for it. Besides, itâs good for you to practice. He turned out to be an easy mark. Your body language was screaming that you werenât interested in the conversation. And trust me, I know when your body says you are interested in something.â She gave a teasing shimmy in Mirandaâs direction.
Miranda rolled her eyes. âPlease tell me youâve figured out our next step?â
âOf course. While you were eating - which, by the way, I will point out that I didnât get to have any - I scanned for possible routes. Do you think you can crawl through some vents in that dress? I kid. If we go through the laundry room, we should be fine.â
--
âFine, you said.â
âShould be fine, I said.â
Miranda rubbed her forehead. âDid you have a plan for this?â
âLet me do a thorough scan.â
Miranda looked around. The control panel of the elevator was flashing red as Kasumi scanned it. âWhat about the escape hatch?â She pointed to the ceiling.
Kasumi shook her head. âLocked when the security alarm went off. Isnât this exciting?â She turned to Miranda and grinned.
Miranda sighed. âIâll be happy to let you relive it over cocktails later, assuming we escape. What are our options?â
Kasumi shrugged. âWell, weâre not going to be able to get either of the doors open. We could wait for them to come get us and try to fight our way out without any weapons at all. OrâŚâ she grinned again.
âOr what?â Miranda asked.
âWe could drop it.â
âWeâre over 100 floors up.â
âOh, thatâs nothing. These elevators have enough safety breaks that weâll only go a dozen or so and skid to a halt. We can deal with it then. Let me take a look.â Kasumiâs omni-tool flashed and buzzed through different options as she held her hand up to the control panel.
The banging started. âTheyâre in here!â came a muffled voice from outside the elevator.
âKasumi. Please tell me youâre making progress.â
âMaybe.â
Miranda looked back and forth between the doors and Kasumi.
âPut your weapons down! Weâre opening the doors!â came a different voice.
Miranda sighed. She raised her right arm, and felt the tingle of the mass effect fields as she began to manipulate them with her hand. She brought her arm down quickly, and then dove over Kasumi to bring them both to the floor.
There was a loud bang as the ceiling of the elevator crumpled, throwing shards of mirrored glass onto the biotic barrier Miranda had hastily thrown up around the two of them.
Then the weightlessness as the elevator, no longer connected to the upper cable, plunged down.
Kasumi howled with laughter.
--
âSo, I understand that I owe you now?â Kasumi said, smiling, as she wiggled in closer.
They sat in the port observation deck, which Kasumi had turned into her own cove of treasures. Miranda had her right arm draped over Kasumiâs shoulders.
âI believe I did say that, yes.â
âYou did. I was there.â
Kasumi turned to face Miranda and grinned. âSo. Money? Jewels? I picked up quite a few of each.â With several grand flourishes, she dropped three credit chips, an ostentatious diamond ring, two watches, and a brilliantly sparkling necklace, gold with several dozen emeralds inlaid, into Mirandaâs lap. âThis, I think, would look absolutely stunning on you.â She disentangled herself and lifted the necklace. Within the blink of an eye, she had fastened it around Mirandaâs neck.
âI was right,â Kasumi said. âI have excellent taste.â She kept her hands resting on Mirandaâs neck, and then traced one collarbone. âUnless you had something else in mind?â
Miranda sighed and grinned. âYou have the oddest sense of foreplay.â
Kasumi shrugged. âIt doesnât always have to end in explosions. But I do so like to have something shiny and new to play with. If we can combine it with stealing industry secrets that can go on to help millions have access to food, well,â she said, eyeing the disc sheâd picked up from their first target, âa girl can multitask.â
âSuch a philanthropist.â
âWhat can I say,â Kasumi said. âI love to give.â
SIGN-UPS ARE OPEN!
Sign-ups for the Spectre Requisitions exchange will be possible from January 20 to February 2nd. You must fill out at least five unique requests and three unique offers (requests and offers do not necessarily have to be the same!). Anytime someone offers something, we will update the âOffers Present?â tab on the nominations spreadsheet with an [x] when it is offered.
You may also choose âAny Pairingsâ and ask or volunteer to write any of the pairings of the nominations list.
NOW THAT SAID: SIGN UP! SIGN UP! SIGN-UP! CLICK HERE TO SIGN-UP!
You can go back and edit your Sign Up Form up until February 2nd @ 06:00PM EST.
A BIG WARNING ABOUT USING âANY PAIRINGSâ: Any pairing means exactly that, that you are willing to get or create fanworks for any pairing. We cannot control what characters or prompts are in an âAny Pairingsâ request. Thus, it should not be used for a request like âAny Garrus Vakarian ficâ.  âAny pairingâ requests should only be requested for when you really want to see a certain trope or kink  (and donât care which characters are used) and should only be offered if you want the sheer challenge of a pure mystery! The only thing we will allow you to limit it by is the category of relationship, eg Gen, F/F, M/M or F/M. Anything else put into the box will be ignored so chose this option CAREFULLY.
If you would like to participate but do not have an AO3 account, please send us a message and we will get you an invitation.
One Important Warning About DNW: Please add your DNW (Do Not Wants) to your sign-ups. We cannot enforce DNWs that are only in letters!
How Do I Sign Up? Instructions beneath the cut:
1) Go to the Sign Up Form at AO3 while you are logged in (or go to the Spectre Requisitions Collection for this year and click âSign Upâ)Â
2) Click the checkmark on âMass Effect - All Media Typesâ for the fandom!
3) Start writing the name of your favorite character/pairing from the nominations. Donât forget to check the spreadsheet if you need inspiration!
3) The box should start to autofill as you type; if it doesnât, simply enter things as they are in the tagset. Select your pairing of choice. You can have one or two pairings per request, and may have ten requests total. This gives you a total of 20 potential pairings to request at maximum, and the minimum is 5 requests and 3 offers.Â
This is what it looks like with one relationship filled in:
Note that the box is still active and allows you to fill more in. If you are planning on requesting only the minimum, please only fill one in per box.Â
And hereâs what it looks like with two tags filled in:
Now, the box is gone, and you've maxed out this request set. Note that when youâre doing multiple pairings, youâll have to put your prompts/likes/DNWs for both pairings in the same box. Donât hesitate to reach out if youâve got more questions!
4) Decide whether you would like to potentially receive fanart or fanfic, or both. Check the applicable box(es) or select âanyâ for both.Â
5) Give your author some idea of what you want to see in the description box.
Good things to list: general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, squicks/triggers/do-not-wants, or anything else youâd like the writer to know. Make sure you list things you definitively do not want. Authors and artists are absolutely forbidden to ignore squicks and triggers. Otherwise, the only guideline of your prompt authors/artists is unequivocally beholden to is the requested pairing, though they are encouraged to take your preferences into consideration.
6) Repeat between 5-10 times, as you like!
8) You may write a letter that goes more in-depth and post it to your Tumblr, DreamWidth, public google doc, or another platform, and then fill in the URL in the letterbox.
9) Fill out your offers. You must fill out at least three unique pairings you would be okay with writing and can choose one or two pairings to fill in per request. If you have any comments for the moderators, please put them in the âNotes for Modsâ section. This should be used for people you donât want to match with, subjects you feel you canât/wonât draw/write, or other information that you think may be helpful for matching you with a good assignment.Â
A BIG WARNING ABOUT USING âANY PAIRINGSâ: You may choose to offer ANY, but this means you could be matched to ANYONE who has signed up for the exchange. Do NOT pick Any Pairings if you are not up for a challenge! The only thing we will allow you to limit it by is a category of relationship, eg Gen, F/F, M/M or M/F. Anything else cannot be controlled so chose this CAREFULLY.
10) Click submit! And welcome to the Mass Effect Rare Pair Exchange!

Spectre Requisitions is nearly upon us! We are counting down the opening of the collection, and hope you are, too! We will open when all participants this year have a gift. Right now, we have two souls still working on gifts, but both have said they should be done before reveals. If there is a delay, we will post about it on the comms as soon as get the information. Right now, we are assuming we will open on time.
Here is a countdown to the opening time!
We hope that everyone else is looking forward to some new rare pair content. It's a busy, frustrating, even scary time for all of us right now. We hope everyone can take a little bit of joy in new fanfics and fanart to read and look at, and find comfort in it.
Please check your AO3 assignments page or the email you have associated with Ao3 and see who you were assigned to! There were NO initial pinch hits this year. If any pinch hitters are required, we will advertise when they become available both on our tumblr and DW comms.
We have done our best to try to ensure that everyone has a good match, but if there is an issue with yours, please contact us. We will handle things discretely and privately. Â
Since assignments have gone out, there are a couple things weâd like  all authors and artists out there to keep in mind:
You are only committing to writing or drawing one thing for your assigned recipient. That means, of the 5+ ideas they have offered, you are committing to writing one. If they asked for two pairings in the same line, youâre obligated to write only one of the two (your choice). Can you do more? Absolutely. Are you obligated to? Absolutely not.
Please remember that the spirit of this exchange is all rare pairs, all the time.Do not use the exchange to try to write/draw a mega-popular pairing, with a less-popular pairing in the background. We do not allow backdoor mega-pairings to dominate works in this exchange.
Please do not post your fic or art on Tumblr/DeviantArt/etc until the exchange has been revealed. It is imperative that everyone gets their gifts at the same time.
Please donât contact your recipient directly. If you have questions you want to ask them, please contact us! We are happy to be intermediaries for you!
If you are writing a story/drawing a picture that features elements Ao3 has default warnings for, such as underage/non-con/etc, remember to tag your stories for such elements to advertise it to those that want to see it and to respect those that donât. If you do not wish to do this or feel like you canât tag a fic or artwork without spoiling the nature of a twist youâd prefer remain unspoiled, please use the âChoose Not to Warnâ option so viewers can make the choice themselves whether or not they want to take a chance on seeing potentially upsetting content.
You are obligated to respect your recipientâs DNW/squicks, but optional details are otherwise that - optional.
Please be careful to not reveal who your recipient is. Posting âIâm so excited about my assignment!â is fine; posting âIâm so excited about writing Thane/Garrus for my best friend @participant!â is not.
If you have any questions or comments, be sure to let us know!
The Deadline for Spectre Requisitions is March 15th. This means that by March 15, we must have an assignment âturned inâ for you. It must be âcompleteâ - that is, the story must have a beginning, middle, and end.
Click here to see how much time youâve got left!
If youâre having trouble making that deadline, please let us know ASAP and we can try to figure out a solution. You can send an ask to this tumblr or email [email protected], or ping either Ace or Keita in the Discord.
