Prompt #40 for Vanity, please. Thanks!
40. âyou saved my life.â
Vanessa frowns. âI did what?â
Charity rests her chin on her hands, the bedsheet slipping down off her shoulders. âYou saved my life,â she repeats.
Vanessa snorts. âYou were hardly dying when I met ya.â
âThatâs not what I meant, babe.â Charity bites down on her bottom lip, looking past Vanessa and towards the closed bedroom door. The house has long since been quiet but she likes to listen for the soft pitter-patter of little feet. Years ago, it would have annoyed her. Now she longs for it. She keeps holding her boys tightly, as if theyâll stop growing as long as she does. But Moses gets a little taller every day and Johnny gets a little braver and she knows they wonât be boys for long.
Vanessa tucks some a stray hair behind Charityâs ear, fingers lingering at the shell of her ear before it drops back to the bed. âWhat do you mean then?â
Charity wishes she could reach into the space between them and take it back now. The words feel silly. But Vanessa is giving her those eyes - the ones that say you can tell me anything and Charity feels her resolve crumbling swiftly.
âJust that. You, you know. Saved my life.â She picks at the corner of the pillow sheâs using. âJust picture where Iâd be now if I wasnât with you.â
Vanessa grins. âUh, off with some bloke who wouldnât appreciate you for who you are?â
âSee?â Charity reaches for Vanessa, soaking it in that Vanessa reaches right back. âOff with who knows who, who knows where. Moses with Ross. Noah with Debbie. Ryan long gone,â she counts off. âI wouldnât have stood up to Bails. I wouldnât have had you when Lisa died.â She stretches forward, her lips brushing Vanessaâs hand. âIâd be someone completely different, babe. And...â She takes a deep breath, losing it all when she realizes sheâs shaking. âAnd I donât know if who Iâd be would be as good as who I am right now.â
âCharity Dingle,â Vanessa says, smile softer now. âYouâve gone a bit soft, havenât you.â
âSoft in the head,â Charity mutters. She moves to turn around but Vanessa grabs her, holding her in place. âYou can forget I said that, by the way.â
Vanessa leans in, their lips brushing. âIâm never going to forget it.â
