Last Tuesday Little, Brown launched their newest imprint, @dialoguebooks. Readers have long been calling for greater diversity and representation in the books being published and Dialogue Books has that at its core. They aim to shine a spotlight on the stories that are often excluded from mainstream publishing, and to provide a safe space for for these voices. Their focus will be stories for, about and by readers from the LGBTQIA, disability, working class and BAME communities. It is their hope that these stories will spark necessary conversations, and increase inclusivity and empathy in the world we live in! . @dialoguebooks have been incredibly generous by sending me this pack of four books, each one very different to the next. They cross commercial and literary fiction, and will be publishing across 2018/ 2019. I am incredibly thankful for being thought of, and included, in this wonderful step forward in publishing! I’m not entirely sure if I can give an honest opinion of this book. Why, you ask? Because it hits so close to my personal life, as (hopefully) one possible future, that I was far too emotionally invested. XX by Angela Chadwick is a story of two women in a same-sex relationship, entering into a clinical trial to have a baby that is biologically theirs. Both of them. Imagine that? Well Chadwick has, and all of the speculation, criticism and politics that could come with a medical advance like this! . I was hooked from the first chapter. At one point in the story, I almost forgot that what I was reading was fiction. Chadwick doesn’t hold back; she’s not kind to her characters. They are the victims of intense scrutiny, vicious attacks, and sickening rhetoric, especially from fear-mongering politicians and conservative and religious groups. However, and most saddening, I can imagine this being the case if the technology ever became available! Having survived the Same Sex Marriage debacle of 2017 in Australia, I can see how progress like this would be received in some circles! . Overall, I would definitely recommend this book! It is hard-hitting and quite brutal at times but definitely leaves you thinking. Published this month by @dialoguebooks, XX is one of the first few titles for an imprint focused on bringing more diverse stories to our lives.
