The meteorite is named for city of Nantan, China, where fragments were recovered in 1958. Over 20,000 lbs of this meteorite have been recovered from a large strewn field; the largest fragment of this meteorite weighed an immense 4,400 pounds! Scientists have estimated the date of the fall to be around 1516, and it may have actually been witnessed—but it is unknown if the fall was the same incident that resulted in the found specimens. This is a beautiful, small sized specimen--it is quite dense and features interesting patterns and surface textures! It has been polished into a lustrous and attractive cubic slice, perfect for jewelry supply or collection.
