Patch of the Day: MER-A Marvin the Martian
Mars Exploration Rover-A Spirit was launched on June 10, 2003 and landed on Mars on January 4, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Station. It was operational on Mars for 6 years and 77 days before the Jet Propulsion Laboratory lost contact with the rover on March 22, 2010. The team tried re-establishing contact with Spirit until May 24, 2011 when the mission was determined complete. Her sister Opportunity remained active on Mars for another 8 years
The patch was created by the Air Force and Warner Bros for the roverās launch team
Depicts Marvin the Martian saluting and standing on a black-colored Martian landscape
Background is the American flag turned verticallyĀ
White stars are scattered throughout the blue and red portions of the flag
Delta II rocket used to launch the rover is shown during ascent to the right of Marvinās head
Contrail begins at his bottom left and from left to right is white, yellow, and red
On the left is a black oval withĀ ā1SLSā in white for the 1st Space Launch Squadron
On the right isĀ āRed Planet Gladiatorsā in black
Includes official name of rover and names of organizations that worked on the rover in white capital letters against a black border with white outer trim
Three white stars on both sides of the border separate rover name from institution names
