So since I became a vegan a few months ago, I started introducing new foods into my diet, and beefing up some of the other aspects. Vegans depend a lot on things like soy, whole grains, and nuts for protein. So I'd been eating a lot of those. Turns out I'm soy intolerant, but when I cut that out, my body only got 3/4 better. So there's still something running around my core diet that I'm intolerant to.
(As a side note, I found out yesterday that this is often a thing that happens to new vegans. Why do we persist!?)
In order to do a controlled experiment (the scientist in me is rejoicing at the way I've handled this), I cut out everything for a week. I've been eating fruits, vegetables, beans (minus soy), rice, and corn. And I feel fantastic. After months of intolerance symptoms, it's such a pleasure to just exist, pain- and discomfort-free.
I keep telling myself, "Today, I'll reintroduce nuts," but it's just so difficult to set aside the time to be miserably sick. "Nope, can't reintroduce anything today, I've got to volunteer. Not today, friends are coming over!" See how this goes? But I know (or perhaps just reeeeeally reeeeeeeally hope) that I'm not both nut AND gluten intolerant, and I need to find out which one it is so that I can get some variety back in my diet.
TODAY I will eat almonds. I'm going to do it. So don't be surprised if I'm absurdly cranky later.
