Americans faced two transformational issues in the 1960’s, The Civil Rights Movement & the Vietnam War. This personalised tour jacket expresses the owner’s dedication to the Black Power movement & his pride in service to his country. The clenched fist embroidered on the rear of the jacket shows a bracelet on the wrist. This was the kind of bracelet soldiers commonly made from spare boot laces. It was a symbol of the Mau Mau, a Black Nationalist organization of soldiers in Vietnam. The Mau Mau took their name from a revolutionary group opposed to British colonial rule in Kenya during the 1950s, the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA). Soldiers often had custom uniform & souvenir jackets made by various tailor shops in Thailand & Okinawa, a Japanese island nearly 1,800 miles north of Saigon. Japan was where the tradition of the jackets called ‘Sukajan’ originated. They were manufactured & purchased by troops as souvenirs during World War 2 & then later during the Korean War. The various embroideries on the Sukajan took on Japanese cultural references the 2 most popular being the dragon & the tiger. The Japanese see dragons as benefactors and protectors of mankind & the tiger represents strength and courage. It protects from evil spirits and bad luck. Okinawa is the site of numerous U.
