things nobody tells you about industrial LCD sourcing (until it's too late)

so you're building something with a screen on it — a kiosk, a control panel, a piece of transit equipment — and it's going to live outdoors, or in a factory, or somewhere that isn't a cozy climate-controlled office. consumer display specs just... don't apply here. here's the breakdown:
brightness — a regular panel does 350-800 nits. put that in direct sunlight and it's basically a black mirror. you need 1000-2500+ nits and something called optical bonding (glues the cover glass directly to the screen, kills glare, big contrast boost)
temperature range — standard panels: 0°C to 50°C. that's fine for an office. NOT fine for arctic rail systems or desert equipment. wide-temp panels go -30°C to +85°C, sometimes with heater films so they can even start up in the cold
lifecycle — this is the sneaky one. industrial programs run for a decade+. a factory can have amazing specs but if they can't guarantee parts availability or a clean end-of-life transition, you're stuck redesigning your whole product in year 6
there are basically 5 "flavors" of factory depending on what they specialize in:
high-brightness / sunlight-readable specialists
medical-grade (ISO 13485, color calibrated)
rugged / wide-temp (defense, mining, rail)
full-service ODM (they'll design the whole module — touch, firmware, enclosure)
long-lifecycle supply partners (built for decade-long deployments)
moral of the story: match the factory's actual specialty to whatever's going to break your product first (heat? sun? just... running for 10 years straight?) instead of just going with whoever quotes the lowest price.
