I saw you answer a question about sex education and this is probably a really stupid question that I should know the answer to since I'm 20 but are there any types of birth control that are 100% affective? I'm a bi girl but if I ever end up with a guy I'm absolutely TERRIFIED of getting pregnant, I never EVER want to have kids and even the thought of getting an abortion terrifies me (I have no issues with them and I would get one if I had to, but I'm just terrified of any medical procedures).
Hi anon!! Don’t worry, I had to look up the answer to this question even though I’m older than you and have had sex with men before. It’s not like we’re born knowing this!
So, good news and bad news. Good news: there are EXTREMELY good methods of birth control out there. Bad news: the most effective ones do involve a small medical procedure.
IUDs (intrauterine devices) and implants are both over 99.9% effective - the only thing more certain is surgically removing your reproductive system. They’re also foolproof, unlike condoms or the pill (both of which have extremely high success rates if, and only if, they are used perfectly all the time). They last for years and are covered by most insurance plans. IUDs do need to be inserted into your uterus and implants beneath your skin, which can feel a little invasive and uncomfortable, but if you want the highest peace of mind possible, these are your friend.
Over the counter methods are less reliable, but still INFINITELY better than nothing - condoms are about 80% for the average person (although learning how to properly apply a condom and using them consistently makes them 99% effective) and birth control pills are 91% effective (again, taking them correctly brings them up to 99%). Barrier methods are the only method that protects from STD’s, so you should be using them unless BOTH of you have been recently tested!
A kind of compromise is a birth control shot, where you get a hormone shot every 3 months. As with the others, it’s 99% effective when you’re consistent about getting it on time, and 94% effective in real life where people aren’t perfect. That’s a way lower IRL failure rate than the other non-surgical methods though.
