The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary. Â Men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.
Joseph Conrad
Whence cometh evil?
There was a question asked by a philosopher named Epicurus that asked "Is God willing to prevent evil and unable? Then He isn't omnipotent. Is God able and unwilling? Then He is malevolent. Is He neither willing nor able? Then why call Him God? Is He both willing and able? Then whence cometh evil?"
Well, there is a very simple answer that apparently few people have thought of. I come to that conclusion because I have yet to find a single website where anyone provides this answer to the question:
A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that evil is actually a thing. Evil is just the absence of good. According to Newton's third law of physics, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. So if good existing is an action, the opposite reaction would be an absence of good. As an example, I obviously exist. However, there are places where I don't exist. I don't exist across the room or next to me or in another country. I only exist where I am. So there is an absence of me. In the same way, there is an absence of good, which is evil.
Now, good exists because of God's traits and characteristics. God is loving, therefore love is good, for example. There is an idea that goodness exists either because of God's will or God's wisdom. But I feel that goodness exists simply because God exists and has certain traits.
A way to determine what is good is to determine which actions have positive result. Love is good because it produces positive results, for example. From there, we can determine that the things we call good are characteristics of God.
So if goodness exists because God exists and evil exists because goodness exists, then the only way to get rid of evil is for God to completely change His traits, traits that produce good results. Even so, the new traits would also have absences and opposites which would become new evils. So it would be very bad to get rid of the things we call evil because by doing so, we would get rid of the things we call good.
Now, some of you may be wondering about the Revelation times when all the forces of evil are wiped out. Yes, the forces of evil will be gone but the concept of evil (i.e. the absence of what is good) will still exist.
So Epicurus' question is a fallacy because evil isn't actually a thing. But if we wanted to answer it, God is both willing and able to prevent evil. However, doing so would result in good vanishing as well as God changing all of His traits, thus forming new goods and new evils. So that is "whence cometh evil."
Uhhh...
The government shut down. Um, Idek what's wrong, I just don't understand this country. Money and Politics are the root of all evil.
