So Sew Day
Elias Howe loved machines. Born in Massachusetts on July 9, 1819, even as a kid, he was fascinated by the way mechanical parts moved together.
When he grew up, Elias worked in a cotton machinery factory. He became interested in inventing a machine that could sew and in 1846, after five years of working on it in his spare time, Elias Howe received a patent for the first lockstitch (two-thread) sewing machine. If your family owns a sewing machine now’s the day to ask for an explanation of how it works.
