@unitlead asked: When did this start? For Brian.
As his finger traced across the faded ink scrawled within a leatherbound journal, Brian Barnaby couldn't help the shiver that ran down his spine. He could still feel the indentations and scratches left behind by the author's pen, even after all these decades. It felt ghostly, almost mournful in a way.
Brian swallowed hard as his gaze lifted from the page, his ever-wide eyes focusing on Doctor Stewart instead. For a moment, he was unsure of how to answer the question. While there was an objective answer, his aching heart told him to wax poetically. In the end, he settled for something in between. He wasn't good at detachment.
"February 29th, 1912. Our young author noted the serendipity of a new visitor on such a noteworthy day. He'd hoped they'd become friends. The illnesses began on the following day."

send me a 🚩 and i'll share my unpopular rpc opinions and hot takes - extra spicy edition
@soberfucker
This is more of a problem with fandom spaces on the internet as a whole, but I have found that this line of thinking is especially prevalent in the rpc.
I'm really sick of reading posts about the decline in media literacy and critical thinking skills. It's not that I disagree in the slightest, I just think that a lot of people who parrot those talking points aren't nearly as capable of thinking critically about the media they consume as they'd like you to think.
I think that a lot of people genuinely see "separating fiction from reality" as the beginning and end to media literacy and don't want or care to engage with it any further. They don't want to unpack the subconscious biases that might be present in an artist's work, and they don't care about the clarity and purpose necessary for something to actually be satirical, and they damn sure don't want to question why something was written if it's going to reflect negatively on the author. They just want to enjoy their Harry Potter fanfiction in peace because someone once told them about the concept of "death of the author" and they horribly misinterpreted it.
Sort of piggybacking off of that, I think this idea that fanfiction is just as valid as published work but it shouldn't be criticized because it's just fanfic is fucking stupid. You want people to take it seriously, but not so seriously that they take issue with it. You should get your props for writing a 15,000 word Supernatural story, but no one should question you about why every woman in it dies brutally.
And I really, really fucking hate this no nuance "anti" vs "pro" shipping rhetoric. No, I don't think censorship is a good thing. Yes, I think people should criticize you for what you write. Including dark topics in your work isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's how you approach it and your intent behind it.

@reverdies said: ‘tell me what’s going on.’ (Alfred to Basil)
While there may have been a quarter century of military service beneath his belt, Major Basil Ashford was not an army of his own. He could not march forward for days on end, could not juggle the heavy burden of of half truths and misdirection. Not in perpetuality. Not when the very foundation of his life had begun to shift like sand beneath his feet.
With his mouth as dry as sand, Basil drew in a deep breath. For once, he didn't have a charming quip or subtle flirtation to use as an escape. The Major was well and truly cornered and, though he didn't want to admit it, he supposed that it was fair. Lord Debling deserved to know the truth.
"You'll think I'm mad, Alfred." He replied after an uncomfortably long moment of thought. "But I think...I think there is something evil here in London. Something unnatural and abhorrent."

@punchedharder said: ❝ why are we whispering? ❞ for brian.
Brian’s near-perpetually wide eyes narrow for just a moment at the question, the corner of his mouth perking to match. He couldn’t quite tell if the woman was being serious or not, and it made him feel rather foolish. That was always how it had been, though. Years of academic study couldn’t quite fill a natural gap in interpersonal communication.
“Because this is a library?” He shrugged his shoulders. “It may be my library, but it’s still a library.”

@ltcainemdpd asked: "Did you hear that?"
Of all the places he'd been, and of all the things he'd seen, Major Basil Ashford did not once think that he'd ever find himself assigned to the muggy streets of Miami, Florida. Still, he supposed that he shouldn't be surprised. True horror can make its presence known anywhere, at any time, and a man like him does not have the luxury of choosing to ignore it.
Looking away from the greusome crime scene assigned to them, Basil locked eyes with Lieutennant Caine. While their relationship may have suffered through the friction of foreign intrusion and tricky jurisdiction, the Major knew that he could trust him. Horatio was a man of principle and character, reliable with his words and his gun.
"Unfortunately, I did." Basil responded to his partner, reaching down to draw his weapon. "It's coming from below. You don't suppose this building has a basement, do you?"

@escapedartgeek asked: "I thought that was a dream. It wasn’t, was it?" for Arturo
With his glasses lost to the seemingly infinite void between his mattress and nightstand, Doctor Méndez couldn't see much of anything in any particular detail. It wasn't as if he really needed to, though. Not at this hour, not with this company. He blinked softly, his eyes shifting from the blurry ceiling fan to the equally fuzzy figure lying next to him.
"I don't think so." He said, his eyes falling shut again. "But if it was, I think it may have been the best dream I've ever had."

@bitofanexile said: (for Basil) "I could get used to waking up next to you."
While Basil was no stranger to a lively romp beneath the sheets, it had been quite some time since he'd had the opportunity to be truly intimate with anyone. There was no pressure to be decent, no rush to be anywhere but there. It was such a simple thing, but so pleasant. He couldn't help but smile.
"Now, Doctor." Basil began with a soft chuckle. "Don't go making promises you've no intention to keep."
As he adjusted his position to better face the Doctor, Basil winced ever so slightly. The previous night's events had left him sore, but in a way that was still yet pleasurable.
"Going to bed with you and having you here in the morning would be such a treat, you know."

@hangtenn asked: "Okay, whose sock is this?" // for brian!
The question hit Brian like the boom of canonfire, sending a shockwave of echoing pain through his skull and making his ears ring. He shut his eyes tightly and whined. Too loud, The professor thought. No, just too hungover. The taste of strawberry daiquiri still lingered on his lips, but he couldn't help but wonder if it wasn't someone else's lipgloss instead.
Brian groaned again as he sat up, clutching the blanket to his bare chest as if he could preserve some sense of modesty. God knew it was a fool's errand. His decency laid on the floor along with his shirt, trousers, and everything else but his socks.
