KAELIN SELENE HALL
| All I really want is to be wonderful.
Staring at herself, Kaelin couldnât recognize what she was seeing. This was a different image than she was used to. Kaelin Hall wasnât the most feminine kind of girl. She was awfully bad at anything beauty related and often just went with whatever clothing wherever she went. She wasnât like those girls that she saw at school with their makeup all done nicely and some beautiful hair to match. She was the complete opposite of that and now staring at herself, she almost ran out of breath.
The curly locks of her hair had gone from wild to non-existant. Her face shined with a glow and her appearance made her look almost like an untouchable doll, one that seemed so incredibly unreal. If it werenât for the help of her mother and her friendâs sense of feminine advice, Kaelin wouldnât have looked so charming. Fidgeting in front of the mirror and clothes all over the place, her room almost looked like a wreck. But she was doing this for him. For August. The boy that made her heart flutter with every look he gave her.
God, August Shaw was something else. Maybe to others this was ridiculous, but August was special to Kaelin. Today had to be perfect. There was no way she was going to embarrass herself in front of him. Picking up some stuff from the floor, Kaelin felt herself getting nervous by the minute. She had, in fact, felt nervous the whole day. Dates wasnât something she did. Yes it was a double date, but that still meant something to her. It was something casual, but Kaelin just wanted to look good for once.
She wanted to cause some great impressions. That was all. And luckily for her, she had organized herself early. She wasnât going towards the late route. Not like the last time when she had arrived late to school. Once placing several things back to where they were, she saw herself sitting at her bed, her eyes wandering at her image once again. What if I donât look good enough? What if he ends up thinking Iâm some sort of mistake? What if he doesnât like me? She could feel her insecurities rising up and her eyes watery.
Sometimes she wished that she had that natural beauty that everyone had and the perfect body to go along with it. Touching her stomach, she only smiled at herself. âItâll be alright,â she whispered. She wasnât going to let the tears get to her. Not right now when her makeup was nicely done. Kaelin took a deep breath and nodded to herself before she headed towards the living room. Her small beige dress was something that she never saw herself wearing. She showed a little bit more skin than usual and that made her look even more gorgeous.
Touching her soft now straight hair, it felt very different. She was always used to her rather curly mess of a hair and now it was something else. It was so smooth that it made Kaelin almost want to keep it like that forever. She couldnât wait to see August by the front door. Kaelin couldnât wait to see his face again. It had been a while since she last saw him and she missed him. She wanted to see him all nicely dressed and stare at him all day. Kaelin didnât even know what she was going to say or make a conversation of when they finally met again.
She could barely even mutter a shy hi to the poor boy. She didnât know how to start on a topic, much less open up about herself or about anything really. Shaking those thoughts away, she decided that she was going to take care of those things later. It wasnât the end of the world. Talking to people is easy, right? Sighing to herself, she could only picture the endless possibillities on how the date would go. She just wanted for this to be perfect and her excitement made her just want to head immediately there, but she had to wait.
A date. Kaelin Hall on a date. Not the usual thing that she expected. The house rang of a soft silence, the only noise was of her fidgeting around in her seat. Mr. Hall had gone out to see some friends and so the only person that was home was her mother whom once was done helping Kaelin, had gone to work on some papers in her room. She was all by herself which to Kaelin was fine because she had enough time to think about everything. Of the whole situation. But what made her feel more secure was the fact that Zeppelin and Emile were going to be there.
August and her werenât going to be alone. And that was completely fine. She barely knew them, but she didnât mind them. Just as she was about to think about something else, she heard the sound of a car which made her almost freeze all together. Kaelin Hall stood up slowly, her eyes focused on the door. She walked towards it, her hands curling up on her sides. She stood in front of it, awaiting what she had been looking forward to all along.

Hey, babe! đ (that-witch-with-a-bell)
Haru blushed and then kissed Vic back happily, âWell, hello there, sunshine!â
This âScaryâ Short Story (and others)
Reminded me of one of those stories from Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark, those books that 9-year-old Morgan used to read and then brag about reading (in the dark). Just like those stories I read in the dark, Donât Look Now has a uncanny twist at the end (the dwarf woman??). Sort of like a punchline--an âI got youâ moment. Like John in the story, the reader gets slashed in the throat with the realization that theyâve been following the narrative of a rather unfortunate idiot.Â
Iâve never really found horror writing scary. This is possibly because Iâve enthusiastically watched so many horror films that Iâve sort of become a bit desensitized. However, I did enjoy the twist at the end and I was rather surprised.
The other thing it reminded me of--and this is extremely different from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (except maybe not really) was James Joyceâs Dubliners. As soon as I started reading I kept getting this strange sense of Joyce. Thereâs definitely similar themes of ominous/morbid settings and regular people that somehow reach grim but somewhat useless epiphanies by the end of the story--usually on how theyâve failed their life--which I guess is the same with John at the end of this story.
