Adrien was in class when he received the email. He checked it, thinking it was probably from Natalie informing him about a last-minute photoshoot.
When he saw who the sender was he straightened in his chair. Nino sent him a weird look.
Wayhem never sent him mails in school hours, it was usually in the evenings. Adrien always checked them once he finished with all his extracurriculars, since he wanted to give them his undivided attention.
He couldn’t help thinking this meant bad news.
He went pale after reading it. It was simple and concrete. His paled face warned his friends that something was wrong. He could hear Nino asking if everything was alright at the back of his head. But he could only re read the email.
He stood up abruptly and started putting his things away. Everyone was looking now but he payed them no mind.
He approached Mrs. Bustier and vaguely explained what was going on.
The look on her face probably didn’t help his friends worry.
He all but sprinted out of the door.
When he arrived at the hospital Wayhem’s mom (at least he thought it was her) received him with a hug. She was crying.
She explained to him. The boy had being a little down recently. Adrien knew this but everytime he asked, the brunette would change the topic. He didn’t want to pry back then, he should have.
'It was some boys at his school', she said. 'I knew someone was bothering him but I figured he would tell me if it got too bad', she said again, over tears.
Adrien hugged her, trying to calm her. Wayhem was in the ER. He was beaten so bad some of his organs were swollen and threatened to burst inside. The doctor said they’d have to take out the ones that were safe to do so. Adrien didn’t understand many of the words the doctor said. But he understood the basics.
Bullies. They did this. They went this far and what would have happened if they hadn’t been stopped in time? He flinched, in time they didn’t know that, was it too late?, the doctor said some more stuff and left.
Wayhem’s mom sat again, face in her hands.
Why? He asked, and she looked at him. Her face scrunched up again and tears kept falling, they didn’t stop at all. But this new expression, it wasn’t pain. It was pity.
This is not your fault, she said at the same time she took his hands. Adrien swallowed. ‘They knew how he felt about you, how much he admired you, they-’ she swallowed a sob, 'They were homophobic, Adrien. They beated him up because he liked you and didn’t hid it, because he was proud of it.’
Adrien looked down at their joined hands. He closed his eyes to try to stop the tears that came down anyway. How was this woman so kind? This was all HIS fault.
Where are them? Who are them? he asked.
‘They’re in the commissary, Agent Raincoprix took them there until we know for sure the state of my son.’ Tears flooded her eyes again. 'He’ll be ok, Adrien. He’s a strong boy.’ she said, but started sobbing yet again.
'I… I have to go to the bathroom.’ he said, but he took another path. Plagg looked at him worriedly but kept quiet. 'I need to see them, I need to know who they are.’ he asked, and Plagg nodded. 'Just don’t do anything stupid, kid.’
'Plagg, claws out.'
