Sonoratown, 208 E 8th St, Los Angeles (Downtown), CA 90014
Sonoratown is inspired by the border town that one of the owners grew up in and also DTLA. They serve Sonoran style tacos, cook their meat over a mesquite wood fire and make their own flour tortillas. The flour tortillas are made with lard.
Choose from burritos, tacos (made with flour tortillas), quesadillas, aguas frescas, and Mexican sodas. Meat options: steak, chicken, tripa, chorizo. Veg option: poblano chile & pinto beans.
Bean & cheese burrito ($4): what a steal. Yes, it is a smaller burrito but the flour tortilla is homemade. It’s filled with whole pinto beans, spicy red salsa, and Monterey jack cheese. The tortilla is chewier than your typical flour tortilla. The salsa rojo was fairly spicy but I didn’t love it (wanted more acidity). The jack cheese added a nice creaminess. The tortilla was grilled to add some smoky flavor.
I didn’t realize it at the time but they’re known for their mesquite grilled meats.
Service was friendly and the food was ready quickly. It’s a cute small place that plays Mexican music and is decorated with family photos. Parking is likely going to be hard to find. They won Taco Madness in 2017.

Burrito 2.0 with steak. Ran right to the car, but it’s still not hot enough. I love this soft flour tortilla. The true star of this meal is the Chivichanga. Can we put that beef in a burrito?
