weirdly specific and unrelated asks to know someone well
There was a a thread in AskReddit late 2021 about scenes that ruined TV shows and movies and some people claimed the scene at the end of Swan Song showing Soulless!Sam not being in Hell ruined the entirety of Supernatural and that the ending would've been perfect without that scene. Someone replied with
"I actually kind of hated the season 5 ending. Can I accept a series ending with a noble sacrifice, a hero laid to rest? Sure! But it's a bit harder to swallow when they're going to be tortured in unimaginable pain for all eternity. In 1 billion years, he'll still be suffering in excruciating pain. That's not an ending, that's a slasher flick. Now, there was a point where I would have been happy with it ending around season 7 or 8, somewhere around there. Sam was going to sacrifice himself and close the gates of Hell forever, and Dean stopped him. I was like, "Seriously? You let him jump into the deepest circle of Hell but you won't let him die peacefully so one of the greatest threats to Earth, the threat that you say will probably kill you and Sam one day anyways, can end forever?" That was stupid."
I agree with that response for the most part.
Honestly, even if that was the intended ending by Kripke (based on what I’ve heard around here it was not), by ending s5 with Soulless, it left the story on an open ending for a movie or as occurred, a new season. That was by far better than leaving Sam rotting in hell, being tortured by Lucifer (and Michael depending on the interpretation). I’m sure some stans would be annoyed with ending with s7 with Dean in purgatory. The s8 ending would be kinder by far to both brothers with Sam being in heaven but it defies the motif established in s8 that is observed in the s15 finale, the ‘Carry On’ that’s only accomplished by Sam. Like the picture guides the process, and the notes stay there so I remember why the heck I did something lmao. Sometimes things change! Like Heath’s tally is no longer about Bobby going feral because he doesn’t go feral! But still, I find drawing + notes and lil arrows really helpful ^u^
