It was unclear to me when, exactly, the walls had become transparent, not to the eye, but to something else, some unnamed faculty that had developed in me without my consent. I had been summoned inward, into corridors I had not chosen to enter, and when I emerged, the room felt different, charged, almost accusatory. I could not say what the others were feeling, only that I felt it, the way one feels a verdict before it is read aloud.
