It was unclear to me when, exactly, the walls had become transparent, not to the eye, but to something else, some unnamed faculty that had developed in me without my consent. I had been summoned inward, into corridors I had not chosen to enter, and when I emerged, the room felt different, charged, almost accusatory. I could not say what the others were feeling, only that I felt it, the way one feels a verdict before it is read aloud.

Two Days, One Night (2014)
In the wealthiest country in the world, wealth scared me; I became mean. I counted out potatoes, I measured soup by half a can, I went to bed early. I looked after myself carefully as if I were a fragile crone because nobody else was going to look after me. I suffered a sort of vertigo of my soul. I was unsettled by open views and endless vistas, by dawn. My heart grew small. I gave the evil eye to cute toddlers making a nuisance on the subway, to Orthodox clans throwing celebration picnics in Central Park, to tourists who seemed to make themselves deliberately unattractive, because if you have a big, sticky family, you don't pay a price for being ugly. Finally I thought: What is all this about? Why am I making this selfish life?

The Sorrow of Marcus Aurelius
“Duration: momentary. Nature: changeable. Perception: dim. Condition of Body: decaying. Soul: Incomprehensible. Fortune: unpredictable. Lasting Fame: meaningless. The body and its parts are a river, the soul is just a dream and mist. Life is warfare, a journey far from home. And after life...is oblivion." -Marcus Aurelius, The Meditations.

I think true love is when two people make each other love themselves more.
