I think people who claim homeschooling is better for disabled children really don’t understand children with disabilities. It’s not adhd and autism, it’s profound autism, it’s children exposed to meth during pregnancy, it’s severe intellectual limitations, it’s physical problems that preclude independent living of any kind, it’s the stuff tumblr users don’t have.
School is a break from caregiving for parents, school is a new environment, school is free care until 22, school is education tailored to their limits, school is OT and resource and things parents cannot do.
I mean… I’m thinking of something as small as a field trip to the zoo. The full cost and logistics are not the parents’ responsibility.
I’m also thinking of my classmates who had pull out resource sessions in elementary school that had them at grade level by middle school. A parent cannot do that - balance what their kid can handle with what they need help with. You need multiple professionals!
I also respect the school shooting fears, as rare as they are, but you can’t give your kid the same experiences and education they need at school. An online curriculum is just not the same.
