                               35. – unforeseen.

     he makes a point of arriving early to every debriefing. goes over his notes and reports, two times, sometimes three. breathes in the quiet of the empty meeting room, the calm before the storm. clears his head. it’s his own private ritual. an inborn habit that hasn’t yet been shaken.  

      (forget the fact that he can’t shake it. or that he doesn’t know what else he would do with all that free time. or that he hasn’t quite figured out who he is without his garrison uniform, or a cause to fight for, or something to strive toward.) 

      he walks through the door, stops dead in his tracks, considers whirling around and leaving. he expects no one, as per usual, but finds none other than the black paladin. (he beat him there.) it’s an… unforeseen turn of events. 

      “the meeting doesn’t start for another hour,” he announces from the doorway, checking the watch on his wrist even though he doesn’t need the reminder. he already has himself timed down to the minute. “did deep space mess with your sense of time that badly or what?”

it wasn’t OFTEN adam took a turn towards STERN,but this was an instance for which CALLED for it—arm extended in gesture towards the PREVIOUSLY potted plants decorating the small kitchen space ; he’s not sure what the kid DID, but now cacti & ferns & DIRT lay scattered atop the counters.

                 what did the succulents do to OFFEND YOU, keith ???

  When his eyes flutter open, it takes a couple ticks and a glance around for him to realize where he is. Hospital room. Keith’s. Judging by the stiff soreness in his back and neck, he’s been here for at least a few hours --- must’ve fallen asleep keeping Keith company while he was sleeping. Stifling a yawn, Shiro scrubs tiredly at his face with one hand and lifts his head, glancing to the bed where his friend lay. ...Awake, this time.

a hefty sigh emits from her pale lips, glancing toward the paladin in AGITATION. acxa knew what she was doing —  far more than KEITH did, anyway. there were too many soldiers for them two to take on with it being just them. she knew the risk she was making ; it was necessary. all that mattered was if he was able to get out while she made a diversion. yet he would not allow it. the moment she came up with the idea, she just went with it  —  his opinion did not matter. not as much as victory.

         ❝     someone needs to.     ❞   she furrowed her brows, scowling at the paladin momentarily. ripping her wrist from his grasp, acxa turned her attention once more to the objective at hand,    ❝     especially if you won’t do it yourself.     ❞

❛      oh⸻      of   course.      apologies,      i   was   lost   in   thought.      ❜         IT   HADN’T   BEEN   MUCH   OF   A   SURPRISE   once   he’d   realized   it,      but   liqua   found   that   time   was   much   more   precious   to   a   large   amount   of   other   species.      he   could   only   assume   with   a   lot   of   these   life   forms   who’s   existences   lasted   only   tens   or   hundreds   or   thousands   of   years   long   doing   things   became   more   of   a   priority.

FOR   LIQUA’RA   he   could   happily   sit   and   observe   the   ways   of   the   world   for   months,      years   even,      before   he   got   the   urge   to   move   on   and   prevent   boredom   that   began   to   nip   the   edges   of   his   conscience.

MOVEMENT   SUDDENLY   PAUSED   as   warning   made   tipped   ears   twitch,      mouth   ajar   in   freeze   frame   for   a   second   longer;      eyes   of   amber   and   bubblegum   shifted   to   stare   at   keith   before   he   finally   moved   again.      lips   shut,      offending   substance   now   pulled   away   with   features   confusedly   trained   on   it.

BREATH   EXHALED   IN   SHORT   HUFFS   as   body   slowly   calmed   from   exertion   of   inner   power,      head   turning   to   glance   at   paladin   who   seemed   a   little……      shocked,      understandably.

STRAIGHTENING   HIMSELF   UP   and   looking   a   little   more   worn   out   than   he   had   moments   earlier   liqua’ra   offered   a   bashful   expression.        ❛     ……it’s   a   power   of   mine,      but   it’s   dangerous   to   use.      ❜         as   if   point   wasn’t   already   clear   by   the   scattered   remains   of   galra   sentries   and   the   small   section   of   enemy   ship   that   seemed   to   have   suddenly   aged   hundreds   of   years   in   a   matter   of   seconds.
