When Apple announced the iPhone 7 at it’s keynote last year, they also announced several knew headphones as well. The AirPods that are much loved by the iAccessibility staff that have them, the Powerbeats 3, the BeatsX wireless earphones (not yet available as of this writing,) and the Beats Solo 3 headphones, which I will be focusing on. For more on paring a bluetooth device with W1 chip, we have…
Effie was going to need another glass of wine. She sat awkwardly in the corner, mournfully looking at the nearly empty glass in her gloved hand. But that meant weaving around her sisters, their partners, the kid, her mother, and her father and going all the way into the kitchen and coming back and once again going around them all to get to her spot that was farthest away from the Christmas tree. Not to mention cutting through the awkwardness that was her mother and father avoiding each others eyes and refusing to make direct comments to each other.
Her lips pursed as she watched the two, especially her mother. She was getting old. The wrinkles and the grey that streaked her hair frightened Effie. Not like her father who barely looked like he aged a day since they had divorced seventeen years ago, and Effie was sure she could see the bitterness in her human mother’s eyes as she watched three-year-old Elliot play with his father. She tipped back the rest of her glass with a bare audible sigh. Nothing like family holidays to bring up bad memories.
“Need a refill?”
Effie’s gaze snapped over to Eva, who held the bottle of wine with a shit-eating grin. Ah, the youngest one could always yell what she was thinking. “Please.” Eva nodded, pouring more wine into her glass before setting the bottle on the table.
“You looked like you needed one.”
“Am I that bad at acting?”
“You won’t be winning any awards any time soon, sister.” Effie snorted at Eva, shaking her head.
“And here I thought I was due to win an Oscar.”
“You could be like Leo if you actually left your corner of solitude.” Effie saw the grin starting to fade off her sister’s face.
“It’s actually been upgraded to a fortress of solitude.”
“Effie.”
“It’s important, it rivals Superman’s.”
“Effie.”
“What?”
The two stared at each other for a moment, before Eva let out a sigh. “You’ve barely said a word to Elliot.” Effie frowned.
That wasn’t fair—her youngest sister always knew where to go. She wasn’t close particularly close with her other sisters, much less their partners, especially since Lin was convinced she was going to kill his kid. But in reality, Effie adored her nephew—the little kid was playing with one of his toys near the Christmas tree under watchful eye by the group that was chattering along. Eva knew that would get to Effie.
“I don’t know what to say to him.”
“Last Christmas you literally tried to teach him how to rewire a screen—“
“You don’t rewire screens, you—“
“Effie.”
Effie sighed, running a hand through her hair. After everything that had happened in Ashkent Creek, it was amazing she was even able to drag herself all the way to Arizona to come to this Christmas. Ella had moved as far away from Maine as she could, she had never liked the cold. And here Effie was, long shirt, long gloves, and long pants with boots… Just to make sure the scars from a certain pageant were well hidden. And to make sure there was no chance of shocking anyone.
“What?”
“You know what.”
Effie just sipped at her wine at that. Eva had always pushed her to reconnect with her family. But how was she supposed to do that when she hadn’t even connected with them to begin with? How was she supposed to do that after everything that was going on?
“Eva—“
“Ball!”
Both Eva and Effie jumped at the sound of the toddler’s voice, and Effie spotted the problem immediately. Elliot’s ball toy had bounced towards their feet and he was already waddling over to them. Effie stiffened slightly, but nonetheless gave him a smile. Out of the corner of her eye she saw all eyes snap to her, watching carefully. Watching her like she was some sort of dangerous being to the child—
“Up!” He held his little hands up to her. “Auntie Effie! Up!”
But she was, wasn’t she? That child was not protected just because he too was a Huxian. Her family wasn’t protected from her. She saw his father stiffen and even Ella was already walking forward. It didn’t matter that Eva was glowering at the two or her father was reaching out to stop Ella. The message was clear. Effie jerked from Elliot’s hands in a mild panic and it looked like he was about to cry—
Damn it.
“Ah-ah, But how will you play with Loker if you’re on Effie’s lap?” It was Eva who saved her, who had replied with ease, pointing to the lazy dog with reindeer antlers on his head. Elliot’s attention immediately snapped to the basset hound.
“PUPPY!” He sang, his clear voice ringing through the room. Effie felt the room relax, but she didn’t feel it herself. Ella was awkwardly making her way over, trying to cover her attempt to save her son from her sister.
“So, Effie! You’ve barely said a word all night! You have to tell us, how is your new job?”
Once again, attention was turned to her as Lin went to go help Loker from getting his ears pilled off.
“Well—“
“New job? You didn’t say you had gotten a new job. Did you sell that shop?” Her father cut in. “You didn’t leave Ashkent Creek, did you?”
“Maybe it’s for the best. That town is weird—“
“I heard it got even worse, no one can find a clear map anymore! Is that why your store isn’t on some of the maps anymore?”
“I was going to apply to the hospital in Portland for my internship, you know. To be close to mom and Effie. But since you moved—“
Effie was immediately overwhelmed. Her family liked rapid fire talking, and that wasn’t how she was wired. Eva reached to put a comforting hand on her should, but she flinched away and cleared her throat, their useless chatter ceasing.
“Um. No. I still work at the shop. I just… am also working part time in the computer crimes at the Police Department.”
“With… other people?” It was Lin’s voice that rang clearly from beside the dog. The implication was clear.
“Lin!” Ella snapped.
“Not like that! Your sister has made it very clear that she likes to work alone.”
“Effie always liked to work alone—she once rewired the entire fuse box by herself.”
“Oh! I remember when we had that giant power outage and she managed to get the generator working!”
“That was the year of the giant sledding race! I totally smoked Ellie by the pond—“
Effie ran a hand down her face in exasperation as the entire family started off chattering to themselves again.
“Effie.”
She glanced at Eva.
“Yeah?”
“I think it’s great you’re working at the Police Department.”
“… Thanks.”
Eva grimaced slightly, before refilling Effie’s glass and going to join in the rest of the chatter. As she watched the kid tug on her basset hounds ears and Loker glowering, she thought that maybe, just maybe, she would make up some work emergency and go home before New Years.
