Controversial Opinion:
After doing a deep read on collected information about Google's new policy, I'd rather not have to do this extremely long process just to install my personal custom apps.
I understand that preventing installation of apps outside of the default store (I don't like how Google calls it "sideloading," especially since other "official" Android forks like Kindle Fire by Amazon for example use a different store) can prevent people from easily getting scammed, but at the same time most people don't install apps from other stores and get scammed that way...
I literally almost got scammed by a freaking Bible app ON the Google Play Store over two years ago because the ads in the app are malicious. But the apps scam you by making you get ANOTHER app FROM Google play.
Now had Google not forced us to give extreme amounts of personal information, AND not make us pay a large fee, maybe I wouldn't be so against this. However, historically what's allowed legally isn't allowed in Google-land, and vice versa.
I have several apps on my Android device that are not installed from Google Play.
Markor: This app literally is the only app I could find that edits HTML5 and Markdown for FREE, AND has a preview, that actually works on my armeabi-v7a device. Also, I use this app for serious stuff for the fan games I work for. This app is more than just "oh I don't want to use Google Docs."
Aurora Store: Sometimes I'm just too lazy to log into Google to install stuff, or I want to test an app and rather it not be directly associated with my account history before sticking with it.
AppManager: This app has quite literally saved my phone. I once installed a File Manager from Google Play and I looked at it through AppManager and it told me it had ad over 400 trackers, and some insecure scripts. Plus, it didn't even just tell me, it let me open the fucking manifest of the app! This app that I have "sideloaded" has actually stopped me from unintentionally installing malware. Literally, Google Play Protect only complained ONCE when I installed a different store... but never about actual malware.
F-Droid: Although me and F-Droid have very different philosophies of what is allowed in a store or what's an "anti-feature," this app literally hosts Markor. If there's anything they did right other than being open-source, it's allowing apps like THAT to grow.
FamiStudio: Although there IS a Google Play version, that version is incompatible with my device, while the GitHub version is compatible. This app has allowed me to compose some fire beats.
I'd rather not wake up one day and see:
My personal documents gone.
My private alternative store gone.
My app inspector gone.
My app repo gone.
Or every single good original song I've made gone.
All because Google decided Android being open was insecure.
Also Google, you've lost so many partners over this. Motorola is literally partnering with GraphineOS now. If your goal is to make money, please don't do this. I'd rather not want to get an Apple device because at least they have a good track record about security.
I didn't get Android because I wanted to be secure, I got it because I wanted to be free.
