You sat on the couch, bored out of your mind, skipping through videos, shows, movies on the tv. When suddenly your eyes light up with a question.
“Hey babe I was thinking… Since when did you fall in love with me? When did it all start?”
Jay nervously chuckles “what’s with the sudden question baby?”
“C’mon Jay, I’m bored and so curious. pleaseee” you pout
Jay melts at your expression but doesn’t even try to hide it as he pushes your hair back and gives you a deep kiss.
“okay, but promise you have to answer too?”
“Deal!” You yell out, eyes lighting up
Jay smiles to himself, you see his eyes reminiscing your years together. Truth is he doesn’t need to think, he knows the exact moment he fell for you. He just wants to make you wait, to see the curiosity in your eyes. To see the impatient, mad, pouty look on your face he always found adorable.
For Jay, it was love at first sight. That rainy day when you shoved your way in the small umbrella as well as his heart.
“Excuse me?” He looks at this stranger who has rudely entered his tiny yellow umbrella that could barely even cover himself.
You turn to meet his eyes “I’m sooo sorry. Could you please let me walk with you? You see I forgot mine and I feel so embarrassed about this but I had no choice. I have a long way to go…”
He feels his heart skip a beat when your eyes meet… your eyes are like drops of coffee in a cloud of milk. Your curly hair was like patterns on fabric. Your voice keeps echoing around him but he drowned in your beauty minutes ago.
You stop speaking suddenly
Jay clears his throat nervously looking the other way briefly scared you caught him admiring you.
“Do I have something on my face?” you wipe your face with your once dry sleeves
He smirks at your oversized wet sleeves, covering his smile with his hand pretending to appear cold.
“Hm?, oh uhm yeah. You got it now.” Jay tries to control his expressions pointing at the spot you had just wiped
“I heard you out and…” He wasn’t listening to a single word
“I’ll walk you home, but you do realize how small my umbrella is right?” He points up eyebrows raised, putting one foot over the other
“Yeah, I’m sorry it was the first one that caught my eyes. You know… because of the color” you awkwardly smile glancing up
Jay makes an annoyed face remembering his bright yellow umbrella. Actually he had misplaced his umbrella as well. Therefore, having to use his little sister’s who has vastly different tastes from him.
“Ah yeah right..” He rubs his forehead, squinting his eyes shut in embarrassment
Jay gets lost in his thoughts for a while thinking about why he cares so much about what you think of him when you’re just a stranger.
You guys kept walking in silence for some time but it didn’t feel awkward. He feels weirdly comfortable with you, barely knowing you. The rain drops on the umbrella, the sounds of your steps, the distant sound of the city. It was all like music to him.
“Hey. Soo… are you always this quiet.” you look up at him disturbing the music.
“Yeah with strangers, but when I know them I’m a whole different person” He says slowly opening up
“Wow we are total opposites” you laugh covering your smile with your hand. A side of Jay hurts when he can’t see your smile that he’s been waiting for
“You’re right, since we have such a long way to go. Should we get to know each other? Question for a question?”
“Okay… can I go first?” He strikes
you nod your head in amusement, excited to hear him talk.
“Are you always this social and friendly with every stranger?” He looks at you genuinely curious on how you could be so carefree.
“Well someone’s nosy” you giggle at his face
”You look like a black cat right now” you laugh harder with your whole body realizing how much he resembles “Pete the cat”. The rain starts hitting your shoulder as he tries to shelter you
“I’m sorry, but to answer your question. Yes actually, I find it easy to talk to people no matter who they are. Call me a fool but I notice the good in people first than the bad. But I’m no idiot, if I feel unsafe then I won’t talk to that person.” You explain starting to walk again wiping your teary eyes from the laughter.
Jay thinks he’s lost it, he wishes your turn to ask him would never come. He wished you would never stop walking with him. The rain to never stop. Home to never come. He wanted you to never stop talking.
“My turn!! What’s your favorite color?” you ask excitedly
He opens his mouth to speak, but you stop him
“Wait no, don’t tell me I’ll guess” you wave your finger in front of his face.
“Yellow!” you yell out eagerly
“Actually-“ He gets cut off again by you running out of his view. He tries to catch up to you shielding you from the rain, getting wet instead.
“WHY ARE WE RUNNING?!” He shouts over the pouring rain.
“I SAW A BUTTERFLY!! I have to see it closer. They’re my favorite” you respond with a spark in your voice.
We come to a stop as the small yellow creature sits on your finger. you squat down as I come closer hovering the umbrella over you and the one that fascinates you.
“Look, and it’s yellow. Your favorite color!” you whisper breathlessly
“You’re going to get sick, running in the rain like this” He chuckles trying to catch his breath
“It was totally worth it” you whisper while playing with the yellow creature. In a trance.
In the same way Jay was in a trance lost in the rain, in this moment, just you two and a yellow umbrella. He can’t hide his excitement for you anymore, He notices himself smiling so wide his cheeks start to hurt. The rain is hitting him hard on his skin, his socks wet, and the hair he styled for so long all ruined. On any other day he would be so pissed, but for today he doesn’t care.
“My favorite color is yellow” He looked at you, finishing his sentence from earlier.
your eyes light up as you silently celebrate being right.
You guessed his favorite color on the first try. But actually, he never had a favorite color until you yelled out yellow. you looked so full of joy, so without thinking, that he said you were right. He hasn't seen yellow the same since, it’s in everything. He could live in it now. He believes he already does. you're the rhythm hidden in the spaces between heartbeats, the color that lingers long after the sunset. Every word you speak hums like a melody, and even your silence sings a song. you're a deep soul with curious eyes, a love that transcends time.
“Jay! Jay! Hello?” you wake him up from his daydream. Jay comes back to reality realizing he was trapped in a memory. You’re sitting across him pouting, arms crossed, patiently waiting.
“Aww my baby, I’m sorry I got caught up thinking” He smiles cupping your face in his hands
“Pshhh, it does not take this long to answer a question, Jay.” You say sulking and acting mad.
He falls back onto the couch, giggling at your expressions. His hands covering his eyes. Your frown fades into a smile looking at his dimples as you fall into the sound of his laughter. Those were your favorite features of his, you’d probably forgive if he committed murder as long as he flashed his dimples.
“Ugh, why are you laughing! Can you answer me already!” You keep up your persona
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry” he catches his breath
“I was laughing thinking of your reaction when I tell you when I fell for you” he smiles staring at you
“Come on, tell me already!” You whine grabbing into his arm
“Rainy day. Yellow. Butterfly.” He comes closer and whispers as his lips graze your ear
He gives you a peck on your cheek and runs away.
“JAY?! WHAT!! The first day??” you call out, sprinting after him. Your heart’s doing flips, you still can’t wrap your head around how long he’s been yours.
