Like he chose to disappear.

Toward a mountain that rises out of the earth like something pushed it there from below.

You find the entrance by accident.

A break in the rock. Narrow at first, hidden behind hanging roots and dark moss. Easy to miss if you aren’t already searching for something that does not want to be found.

The air that slips from it is warm.

Your steps echo softly. The walls narrow, then open, then narrow again, guiding you deeper without asking permission.

The breathing grows clearer.

Heavy. Measured. Slow.

Like the earth itself is exhaling.

You follow it.

Horns curled like old roots, thick and worn. Eyes glowing faint in the dark, fixed on you with a stillness that feels almost reverent.

His chest rises.

His belly expands.

Slow. Immense.

His fingers flex against the stone beneath him, claws dragging just slightly like they remember what it feels like to tear.

And still, you don’t run.

He could end you in a breath.

And you know it.
